Kevarim
Jewish cemetery near the Old Powazki. Established in 1809, it is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the world. Spread over an area of nearly 44,000 square feet (3160 square meters), the cemetery was left largely intact by the Nazis and includes the graves and tombs of a quarter of a million people, including the great Rabbanim of Warsaw as well as many secular giants in literature and the arts.

The Jewish Ghetto
The infamous Warsaw Ghetto, the scene of the only organized uprising.
On the left side of the Praga River, where the Ghetto used to be, you can visit several monuments commemorating the Jews of Warsaw, including the Monument over the Ghetto Heroes at Zamenhof Square, and Umschlagplatz, a memorial raised at the very spot where Warsaw Jews were gathered in 1943, loaded on cattle wagons and transported to the death camp at Treblinka. It is still possible to see how Jews lived in Warsaw ulica Prozna, a street left largely intact from before the Holocaust.

I just got back from an 8 day trip to Poland (Warsaw, Lublin & Krakow), Prague, Slovakia (Nickelsburg & Pressberg) and Vienna. Warsaw is a depressed and horrible city witout any culture left and was almost toally rebuilt after the war. However, there is a huge amount of Jewish history as back then it was a vibrant city and the Jewish Community was 350,000 strong. I would recommennd going to the Umschlagplatz where over a half a million Jews were put on trains to Treblinka, walking to the Ghetto Uprising memorial and then to Rappaport memorial. You also have Koshnitz (Koshnitzer Maggid), Ger (Chedushei Harim & Sfas Emes and Gerrer Beis Medresh), Vorka (Rav Yitzchok Vorka) & Kotzk (R’ Menachem Mendel of Kotzk) within driving distance if any of these places have meaning to you nd you can get a driver.

Of course not, what I meant was if he has a special connection to any of the above (for example if he is a gerrer) he can make one stop. If not he should stick to Warsaw itself as I mentioned above.

And regarding starting Chassidus, you are correct chassidus shtams from the Baal Shem but the the form of chassidus as we know it today came from Peshischa.

Thats what Im talking about!!!

I think it is about 1 hour away but I might be mistaken as I went to so many places and dont remember exactly. It should be easy to find out though. The old shul in Peshischa is also very interesting.

As you are a direct decendent then I dont think there is a better place for you to go!! Reb Simcha Bunim is buried right next to him the Yid Hakodosh. I went with a tour so I didn't arrange anything but I will try to get you some info. I'll PM you.

Has anyone been at the Westin in Warsaw...its not too far from the Chabad to walk for Shabbos. What does one do as far as the elevator if there isn't stair access?

It seems that the non-smoking rooms are on the upper levels....:(

Thanks!

There is no need for a guide in Warsaw.

Go into any tourist info/shop, and they will sell you a jewish map of warsaw. If you are a little wizit, its easy to figure out.
