I just buy the regular ones and toivel them. You let them dry our for a few days before plugging in and they are fine.

As for adding hot water on yt, what's the problem? The light?

Most of them switch to Boil mode when you add cold water. I've seen one with Shabbath mode that worked on Y"T because the light didn't change.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

The light is usually an LED, at most a Deraban

The real issue is the coil which is Gacheles Shel Matchis, possible Deoraisa.

Thanks

I forgot to mention that it needs tevilah.
Though as others mentioned just leave it to dry a few days.

Pouring in cold water that activates the heating coil may be a deoriasa.

My brother-in-law has a "heis" which is working perfectly after 7 years, and the water is very hot!!

Does anyone know which urns have to have a cup emptied out b4 Shabbos to avoid having the cold water in the gauge getting cooked on Shabbos when filling a cup. (Emptying a cup, makes that the water in the guage is already mevushal).

Just a tip-

If you see white build-up on the inside of any urn...
That is not going to let the unit work well and can shorten the life of the appliance.
To remedy...
Fill the urn with white vinegar to at least cover the part that has the build-up.
Either leave it for a day or two or just turn on the urn for a few hours to do a quicker and better job.

Let me know how it goes..

This help really well in those instant electric urns..

Is the after taste only if it's boiled or even if it's just left to sit? Additionally, if I boil water after doing this and spill it out 2-3 times, will that help with the after taste? I can't imagine having a vinegar flavored coffee  :-\ ??? :o

I never did it just sitting (I always boiled it.) I did it for my shul and I could say some ppl weren't so happy. Yes it helps just don't know how many time u need to do it though... Just be ready for it to be out of use for a week or so...
