IF YOUR OBI NEEDS UPDATES SEE HERE

See here for some good tutorials on setting up the Obi.

You can switch your current landline number into a Google Voice account to retain your phone number on a free Obi phone line.
To port your landline to GV:
  • Get ahold of an old Page Plus or Verizon cell phone that isn't being used. Port your existing landline to Page Plus for free through their website.
  • Fill out the port form and put in your landline number and the old PP cell phone's ESN or MEID number (from under the battery) and wait a couple of days for it to go through. You will know that the port is complete, when dialing your landline rings on the cell phone.
  • Once the account is active, buy $10 worth of minutes from PagePlus in order to receive the verification call from GV.
  • Now you can initiate the GV port. It's a good idea to open a new Gmail account. You can then setup all emails that come to that account (all the voicemails notifications) to be forwarded to your main Gmail account. Login to GV from the new account and port in your number. It will cost $20, and you will get an email when the port to GV is complete.
Using the above method will only have incoming Caller ID numbers, not names. If you want names as well, follow these steps:
  • Go to https://www.callcentric.com/, click Products, then click the yellow Get A Number button next to Free Phone Number.
  • Use the tool on the left to pick an area code, then order the number. It doesn’t have to be something memorable, because no one will ever have to dial it.
  • When it asks if you’re in US/Canada, either select Yes to use their E911 service, or No if you want to use something else. Callcentric setup is free, plus $1.50/mo if you want E911 services. See below for more details.
  • After you receive a confirmation email from Callcentric with your new account info, go to obitalk.com, and log into your Obi. Click SP2, scroll down to OBiTALK Compatible Service Providers, then click Next. Follow the prompts to link your Callcentric account. In the box that says Callcentric Number, enter the 1777 number you got in the email. Uncheck Primary Line for Outgoing Calls and 911.
  • Open Google Voice, go into Settings, and add a forwarding phone. Enter the real phone number you got in the email from Callcentric. Google will call it to confirm; it should ring on your Obi. Answer it and enter the code shown by GV.
  • Uncheck forward to Google Chat.
  • Log into your Callcentric account. Click Preferences. Under General, enable Caller ID with name (Inbound calls). (You can also change the maximum call duration, and unlist yourself from the directory).
or this for a $5 one time fee.
https://simonics.com/gw/?promo=nerdvittles

If you’re not using Callcentric, you have to set up SP3 in Obi settings to point to your E911 provider’s account.
E911 providers:
Callcentric$18/year ($1.50/mo) + $1.50 setup
Anveo$15/year
http://www.gv911.com/$12/year
http://www.bulkvs.com/e911.html$8.64/year ($0.72/mo)

If you want the SP2 to ring like the standard US ringtone:
go to obi expert config, then to voice service, select sp2, and change it to this:
X_ServProvProfile B
X_RingProfile   A
X_CodecProfile   A

You can add your CID http://www.listyourself.net/ListYourself/listing.jsp?ID=new
and check your CID http://who.scalling.com/411/

You can do it. Second line will have a distinctive ring.
I have mine setup with 2 lines you can configure the settings to have regular landline ringer for both lines. The info should be in the wiki for configuration of the second line and ringer settings.

Is there a way to shutoff Google voice voicemail?

If someone is on the phone, my answering machine doesn't pick up, and Google voicemail comes on. But I rarely check Google voicemail, and have found very important messages there weeks later.

I'm looking to port an Optimum Business Landline to GV.

I started with this method,
Quote
Correct procedure for porting any number into Google Voice:

1. Open a new Google account here.
2. Open a new Google Wallet account here. This ties in with your Google account you created in step 1. Fund your Google Wallet account with $20. This is your port-in fee.
3. Purchase a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card kit. Plenty available on eBay as well.
4. Activate a T-Mobile prepaid plan with this SIM card kit by going here or calling 844-730-5912. Please have a credit card handy to fund your balance. Cheapest prepaid plan is Pay As You Go for $3 USD.
5. When asked, instruct T-Mobile to transfer an existing phone number, not get a new one. You will be asked to provide current, accurate billing information which would come from your Cablevision bill.
6. In a few days, your Optimum Voice number should stop working from the cable modem and work via T-Mobile instead. To confirm, borrow someone's GSM cell phone, pop your SIM card in it, and make a test call. Caller ID should reveal your old Optimum Voice number.
7. Open a new Google Voice account here. This ties in with your Google account you created in step 1.
8. When asked, instruct Google Voice to port in or transfer an existing number, not get a new one. Follow all the steps including the payment of your port-in fee.
9. Port-in should take 24 to 48 hours. Be patient. Unlike your phone line behind cable modem going dead, the only way you'll know number ported is by making a test call from Google Voice. So...
10. Open Google Voice account here and call yourself using the app. You can also install Google Hangouts from app store and try it that way.
11. Done.

Yes, this seems exhausting to do but if you made it this far, your attention span is better than most and nothing is cooler than free calling.
but some of the info was incorrect or out of date.

I may be able to do it with slight adjustments but I'm wondering if anyone has any comments on it.
Also, does the method in the wiki (using Page Plus) still work?
Any recommendations on which method is better?

I have a comment on that. I would use AT&T prepaid. SIM costs $0.99 and you can get either $2/day plan or $0.25/minute plan.

What does the Simon Telephonics thing do? Give you caller ID?

OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW!

As you may have already known, in August of 2016 we notified customers that the OBi1 Series Devices (OBi100 & OBi110) had reached their EOL (end of life) and would no longer be supported by Obihai. Unfortunately, a recent google Voice server security requirement has caused the OBi1 Series to no longer be compatible with Google Voice. Thankfully, Obihai has a solution and it starts with the OBi2 series (OBi200 & OBi202). Both devices are fully supported and capable of using Google Voice as a service. If you are concerned about the transition, don't worry, we posted a BLOG showing how simple it is to move your Google Voice and, if you have one, an Anveo E911 account to your new OBi2 Series device.

Google can't port from Cablevision directly?

Enter the IMEI of the GSM phone you are planning on inserting the SIM card into.

I currently use an AT&T phone for my cell phone. I was going to use that, but if I put that info in here, will it mess up my current phone/sim/plan?

I don't think so. You should be able to swap out the SIM card just for the time you need to activate the AT&T prepaid service and to answer the verification call from Google Voice.

I had the McAfee app on my phone. It detects when you change SIM cards and locks the phone until you enter the McAfee PIN. It also sends out a text back to McAfee's server containing information about the new phone number. Beware that sending that text can use up one day of service in case you signed up for the $2 per day plan. Just beware of this if you have this app or something similar.

One more pointer: When you buy the SIM card online, they add an airtime card to your cart. If you don't need that much airtime, remove the airtime card from your cart. You can buy airtime later by buying a card in a store or by paying online or over the phone. The minimum air time you can buy is $10. However, I had no problem paying $2 by credit card by talking to a representative.

Common sense is not a gift, it is a punishment.
Because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.
