Skiing 101
« on: January 18, 2016, 03:57:27 PM »
I'm going skiing for the first time in my life.

Am I better off with a 3 hour group lesson? Or 1 hour private?
TIA

Both wont do much for you but I would do 1 hour private... Group lessons are practically useless.. If time/$$ are not a constraint and you dont ski often do a 2-3 hour lesson... Its kind of hard to build off a 1 hour lesson unless you plan on having 1 a week or so

1 hour private or even group just so u know what to do then hit the slopes with a friend who is better at skiing for a couple hours.
And don't listen to that friend if he says you can do a blue right away
I'm not who you think I am.

3 hour private.. invest in one good lesson or you can go with a friend and hit the bunny slopes until you feel comfortable & learn how to stop. Otherwise you become a danger to the regular skiiers :)

Don't be afraid to fall as you WILL fall & don't get frustrated.
The hardest part is getting up after you fall.. :)

Once you get the hang of it the rush you get is amazing

Ok, think I'll go with a private lesson. And then just spend a few hours practicing.
Just to get an idea.  I'm not great with skating, blading etc.
I'm more of a hiker, biker, swimmer, kayaker etc

Just thought I'd try skiing once in my life.
I also could use another winter sport to get through these months. :)

my experience with skiing is bunny slope was too crowded to do anything and its not steep enough to do good turns. greens got easier to turn bc its steeper(kind of like why its harder to turn the wheel w/o power steering when ur not moving but as u go faster you can turn better).
once you understand in your head ''how to turn'' just keep to those rules and ull surprisingly find yourself turning. eventually I felt bad for the guy who was skiing with me who was MUCH better than (5 yrs my junior!) and decided to do a blue.much steeper, but I stuck to sharp s's and it was very enjoyable :) enjoy!!

This
YouTube playlist from the Ski school channel should help with the very basics as well.
I found (when taking friends for the 1st time) that it helps a bit to know the theoretical side of things even though you never went before.

i would definitely recommend private vs. group. skiing for almost 30 years learnt as a child. i just started to teach my son this season and with a private lesson (given by me) we were successful moving from bunny to main mountain in two days. (hes 4) with private can address specific areas of weakness as opposed to generic "PIZZA!!"

Yup. I've taken both, the difference is incredible.

Also, a #ddf tip, if you are going midweek, see what level's lessons (noob, beginner, advanced etc..) Have no participants, say you want to learn that. You get a Private lesson in whatever you want!

As always, Ymmv.

Thanks everyone! Ended up going with a private lesson. Was excellent.
Had a fantastic time.

Loved watching the 4 year olds flying down the hill past me. Amazing.

Going for the 1st time skiing, plan on staying for shabbos near  the poconoes, which mountain would be the best for me to go as a beginner?  Mountain creek, camel back?

Also any recommendations if there's rentals near these locations which I can pick up a pair of skies and poles? (I heard the rental for the skies are a few $ more at the ski resort, that true?
 Thanks...

(am I suppose to take lessons, or can one pop on the mountain and learn from scratch and from watching other skiers?
How much can a lesson cost? Same as a lift package?

Never been to Mountain Creek but camelback is great for beginners lots of bunny hills and plenty of greens there are multiple rental shops off the mountain all in the 20 -25 dollar range.

One piece of advice though, if its your first time going you may want to rent on the mountain because you will probably need things adjusted or exchange sizes etc
