Stolen Visa Gift Cards
« on: January 27, 2016, 11:21:49 AM »
I apologize in advance if this is not the right location to write this. Ok, here goes:
I bought $1200 worth of $200 Visa gift cards at staples a few weeks ago, with my Chase Ink card, in 2 separate purchases ($400 & $800). They were stolen from my car a few days ago (stupid move by me to leave them in car, I know), and I called chase to find out if I was covered for them. They told me that while the sink card has a purchase protection plan covering theft up to $10,000, the gift cards were NOT covered because they are considered "negotiable currency", or something like that. Anyone have any experience with this? What do I do?!?! Freaking out over here

Damn that sucks, sorry. Did you try inquiring with renters/home owners insurance?

Do have the receipts? Maybe call giftcardmall or whoever issued them

+1 Long shot but maybe they can cancel them remotely and refund you if they haven't been spent yet?

Was going to mention that. I had hiccup recently where active card was left @ staples (I got empty one) and this worked to fix it. But with no receipts, not going to work
Maybe go to store again and see if they can reprint receipt

I once read somewhere (it was a long time ago, I don't remember the details) that someone had success by talking to the Staples manager of the store where he bought it. He was able to pull up the sale and then they cancelled the cards.

Hope the funds were not yet liquidated and you succeed. $1200 is money...

I am sorry man... I really feel bad for you. Just know that even in times like these Hashem is running the world and only does things for your own good... Know it and then you will see it!

You can obtain a receipt thru Chase, but it may take time to get it, going to the store is definitely the right thing for now.

I just had a similar situation with GCs bought at shoprite which went missing. I called corporate they gave me the bar codes off the back of the GCs. All they needed was date and time of purchase and cc used. Then called Giftcardmall and had them reissue. Try it with the store you bought it at.
Fair warning - Any PMs sent in response to forum posts are fair game for ridicule in public.

Odds are they're already spent, but this needs to (have been) be your first move. Immediately.

Gonna echo what everyone here said: basically get to the store ASAP, get the receipt, and try to cancel remotely. One thing I will add, you are somewhat covered for fraud, once you prove that the gift cards were yours and not the guy who stole them. They will initiate a fraud claim with the store that tgey were used at. It will take many weeks probably even months. If the store can't prove that they were indeed his GC's you win the dispute.

just to understand that last part, bc i (probably like everyone else) am worried about these getting stolen... r u saying that the VGCs have there own built-in fraud protection? ie, if soemone steals them and uses them, the store they were used at is liable for not making sure theyre stolen?
