Über is seemingly a much smarter way than traditional car service to get to the hospital on Shabbos. If ones wife is in their ninth month, and they might need to go in on Shabbos, setting up The Über app before Shabbos seems to save a lot of Chillel Shabbos. (No phone calls, no paying.) So I called a Rov on Friday (Rabbi Kraus of Lakewood's Bais Horaah) and after telling me that he has to think about it, he agreed that it is the case (ask your own Rov though). He told me to practice pushing buttons with my nose, so that on Shabbos I could summon them with a Shinui (if possible).

If you're using this, make sure to shut off screen lock and plug in your phone so it shouldn't die. Make sure you have a valid credit card on file. Type in your address and the destination hospital address. Click the arrow to the next screen and set the phone somewhere that you'll be able to click the summon button with your nose. You should probably have a car service number handy just in case there's no cars around. I had this running over Shabbos and it used around 100 mb of cellular data.

I apologize for making a separate thread for this. I only did so because it's a Shabbos question that is potentially relevant to almost everyone.

Using knuckles wouldn't be enough of a shinui ?

According to my rov, using a different finger or your other hand is enough of a shinui.

I'm no posek but if using your nose has a slight chance of delaying the time that the car would show up I imagine you shouldn't use your nose.

He told me that using a different part of the hand is Klachar Yad but Lechatchila I shouldn't use my hand at all. He told me that I should practice with my nose and if it's not working I should call him back. I mastered it with my nose so I didn't call him back.

What about the possibility of your Uber driver being Jewish?

I don't think any more chance than a car service driver.

While that may be relevant for other medical emergencies, that is rarely relevant for a woman in labor
Life isn't about checking the boxes. Nobody cares.

Not where I live (Crown Heights). The non-Jewish car services have entirely non-Jewish drivers. I've had a bunch of Jewish Uber drivers

In NY there's all-Spanish car services.

Depends on the situation. Having a yid do a malacha is certainly worse than having a goy do it.

Why not, doesn't a woman in labor have a din of a pe'kuach nefesh ?

Sometimes she goes in & the dr says that labor hasn't even begun yet.

a) Better to be Mema'et in Chillul Shabbos as much as possibe (that's why we have this whole discussion about a Shinuy in the first place).
b) The Uber driver has no Heter to take the car back home after he drops your wife off at the hospital.

Right and sometimes someone we think is having a heart attack is realy just suffering from bad heartburn. Either way I thought we don't take chances.
