Scary stuff about Google's power
« on: February 28, 2016, 01:18:10 AM »
I've been a Google fan for quite a while. I like many of their products (and the price), and have stayed away from the apple ecosystem.

Several months ago I switched to an iPhone, as it was the only mobile device that allowed me access to corporate email. And while I still dislike it, I have gotten to respect the quality and integrity.

The recent FBI vs Apple dispute just added a few more points in Apple's favor (though I still wish they would have a physical keyboard).

This latest article which I just read, just got me totally scared of Google (though I doubt we will find any company with normal political leanings coming from the left coast - I have considered boycotting Amazon after what Bezos did in WA politics, but it was almost impossible)

Read the following article and then let's see what we all think about Google
https://aeon.co/essays/how-the-internet-flips-elections-and-alters-our-thoughts
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

If the article had a point, it should have made it somewhere in the first 1000 sentences.

But if any of these engines then become polarized it might wake people up from being so naive

I have never visited the site up until today.

I subscribe to John Mauldin's "Thoughts From The Frontline" and "Outside the Box". Mauldin is one of the most insightful analysts around.

This past week he brought this article as part of his "Outside the Box" subscription.

Read the article carefully. Given the technology they can do things like this without any proof or trail to show that they did it.

You or I, being people with solid opinions, might never see this stuff on our searches, but given the AI algorithms, it will be targeted to people who are unsure.

Of course the potential is true and I believe the reality is true, as well.
Read up, all of you who chided me as being paranoid for wanting to stay away from "One Google".  (Google docs, gmail, Google maps, etc)  We all know Google (and all the other big corps) collect information to better understand us to ultimately get our sales/money.  I was shaken when I saw their "bots" instantly follow me wherever I clicked.  How many of us participated in our fellow ddfer's school project on clicking?  It's real.

Consciously using this information to create better rapport, communication, and influence the listeners' thoughts has not really reached individuals in the masses as of yet.  It has, however, reached middle and even lower management in large businesses and schools.  Salesmen seem to come by it naturally without having to be taught.  When we make a customer feel good about buying that which he came to buy anyway or communicate to a child in a language style which he will understand...that is good.  When we influence an unwitting customer using confidential knowledge of his personal life...that is bad.  (Caveat: assuming this is not done for his good.)  When we are suppose to be unbiased and influence and unwitting customer...that is what becomes scary.

I am not a  Doomsday person, but this ain't lookin' pretty.  How far behind the Chinese are we?  :o

"By 2020, China will have put in place the most ambitious government monitoring system ever created – a single database called the Social Credit System, in which multiple ratings and records for all of its 1.3 billion citizens are recorded for easy access by officials and bureaucrats. At a glance, they will know whether someone has plagiarised schoolwork, was tardy in paying bills, urinated in public, or blogged inappropriately online."

Dont only look at who the articles are about, check out the content.
The other day I tested this out and got an article from a conspiracy theory website speculating about some stupid claim about Rubio. I cant imagine that it was a highly popular article.

The different results people are getting for the same search just reinforce the points made by the article!

It can be because out of the thousands or millions of data points that google has about you, a few of them were linked with people that would vote for Hillary.

It is scary to think what power these companies have.  Im not a conspiracy theorist but its hard to deny that search engine results and social media can influence our behavior.  Research has shown that over and over.  I have no idea if Google is taking advantage of their power on the election.  We do know for a fact that Facebook has done things like this in the past.  only way to protect yourself is to not use any of these sites/apps.  Google, FB, Twitter... Which most people are not going to do.
