Paying a friend using online bill pay
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:51:13 PM »
A friend of mine told me he does this and was wondering what ya'll think.

I primarily use chase bank. If i need to send a check to a friend of mine, can i set him up as a payee in my online bill pay and have chase send him a check?

Chase requires an account number which i obviously can make up as not all payees have account numbers...

Do you think this would work with chase? Any harm in doing this?

I don't think there's any harm in it.

I've done this with Citi many times without issue.

Thanks guys for the speedy responses. So you just put in a bunch of numbers as the account number?

I do it all the time with chase (it could take 5 days till he gets the check) the money goes out from your account once u send him the check (not when he cashes it)

But why not use chase quick pay its even cooler and takes 24hr

I don't think he needs to have one, at least not under $1,000.

With Chase quickpay, only one member, either the payer or the payee, needs a chase account.

I use TD bill pay to pay everyone and never had an issue. In the account number field I just put 0 and it's fine. It's anoying because, for example, I once sent someone a check and of course the money leaves your account right away. 4 months later he tells me how found the check in his drawer and TD never even let me know that the check was never cashed, and there's no way to tell.

I actually prefer if there's someone I pay often, I just ask for his acc#, routing #, and checking or savings, and ACH the money to him. That was it's there quickly and I know he got it.

Is there a fee to ACH money to someone? I was looking on chase.com and it looked like there was...is there a way to do it for free?

ACH is typically free.

Some banks allow you to ACH to others, some don't.
For Citi the names on both account must match for a pull or push ACH initiated by Citi.

Need to send a large payment to repay a loan (QP is out). Is the best way to do this via bill pay? Some other way?

Can send a wire too, but that will cost you each a few dollars.

More than a few, Chase charges an arm and a leg. Never signed up for CPB, then it would be free :(.
However, appears that Chase has ACH payments now, which appear to be free

You sure ACH is free?

Wires are free for all CPC, not just PB.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

Right, never signed up CPC at all. Just never got around to it. Really annoying because the limit is like $25K for a wire.
