I don't get this. Can someone clue me in as to how in the world this works? Unless there is hashgacha in the stores, the CY milk is no more than a gesture. Is there a clientele for this?

You can almost tell from the star k spokesman's statement that it's pretty worthless without a hashgocha on the store.

"While we of course don’t certify the store or this program we are aware that Starbucks has decided to be using only CY in those stores as a service,”

Who would buy milk with a broken seal? I mean, even if kashrus weren't a concern.

He probably meant the milk for coffee.  Not the milk for purchase by the bottle.

It is cholov yisroel, technically, just not reliable as such. Since the seal was broken no one can confirm what it is.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that.

Frankly, I'm surprised that anybody at all relies on that. But I'm not from Monsey.

If it was milked in the presence of a Jew then it's cy. But once the seal of the bottle is broken we cannot rely that this is the original milk that was milked in the presence of a Jew.

You're technically correct.

By the way, just wondering, for those who rely on USDA in place of keeping cholov Yisrael, is that only for sealed containers? I mean, the USDA is at the farm, they're not at the restaurant.

Interesting question.

I know Coffee Bean has one CY store in La Brea in LA (it's also closed on Shabbos) but even there it really is just the milk that is CY, the whipped cream, mixes everything else is Stam.  That's a different story and already CB already only has kosher food and like I said this one is closed on Shabbos so a lot of Yeshivish people that keep CY do go buy stuff there but I don't think Lubavitchers did (maybe some of you guys know).

It can probably be relied on as much as any other customer entering the store would be relying that the milk in the opened bottle is still the original USDA milk.

Exactly. Ergo, it's not CY.
