Health insurance for children going to yeshiva
« on: June 21, 2016, 10:45:30 AM »
Iy"h next year I will have a son going out of state to learn in yeshiva.
What do people in these situations typically do for medical insurance?

Not speaking from experience with this situation, but if the child is covered on your plan right now, they're covered when they go out of state as well. It's just a question of how useful your current coverage will be where your child will be in school. Have you looked into that?

Not necessarily. I know people who have great plans but do not cover out of state services.

My point was that being out of state does not remove the child from the parent's plan. So the first step would be to look into the out of state coverage of the plan they already have.

+1.
Likely the coverage would be sufficient for emergency care and anything else he could do when he's home for yomim tovim

-1 plans usually don't cover long term travel

I remember having a Leumit or perhaps another Israeli plan for bupkes when I was in Yeshiva many years ago. Canadian though.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions.m the plan he is on now will only cover emergencies out of state and my wife is concerned what to do about  routine doctors visits.

They will be in Nyc.  I wonder if travelers will help.  I'll look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.

If he doesn't have independent income over the eligibility requirements, and you don't need him as a dependant, why don't you get him on Medicaid  (assuming he's 18+)?
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

for the one or two "routine" dr visits (I'm guessing a strept throat or something like that) he can just go to a local dr and just pay out of pocket. its probably not more than $100 a visit. (the medicine should still be covered under your current plan I assume)

depending on the cost of the insurance this may be cheaper

I dont know about FL but I'm pretty sure that medicaid wont cover you out of state.

Also you might lose medicaid if you are out of the state for more than a certain amount of time

Did you ask the school? They may have a plan set up for students? They may even have a sickness rider on their standard k-12 on premises accident plan that covers the kids while on school premises and under their care including dorms, in which case you wouldn't need to buy anything.

Chances are, if he's going away for Yeshiva, there won't be any routine doctor visits. Unless he breaks an arm playing basketball, he probably won't be seeing a doctor while he's away.

He's a teenager who thinks he's invincible.

Now sitting in a NYC ER for a strep throat? Not so much fun..

It seems that the standard approach is to just rely on the fact that your insurance will cover emergencies and for anything else either just ignore it or pay out pocket.
This isn't  such a risky gamble to make but my wife is very concerned that there Could, somehow be major expenses that wouldn't actually be an emergency.
