Mochjas Summer trip to Thailand and Hong Kong with 2 kids!
« on: July 12, 2016, 02:59:46 PM »
First of all, I want to thank everyone at DDF who helped me with any questions that I had. This trip of a lifetime would not have been possible without you guys.

Most people who go on a trip like this would go without kids. We went with our 2 kids a 3 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. (and one on the way 3 and a half months along) So I guess that will be the aspect of this TR that is unique and different from the previous ones.

I zeroed in on possible dates for this trip (it had to be done by FEB 2017 bec I booked CX F pre deval and had a year to use it). My wifes new pregnancy did not help things; it only made me have to rush the trip further. I zeroed in on July 4th weekend since in my work that is a quiet time as most people are away starting the Thursday before until Tuesday.

I waitlisted for 2 suites tickets on 6/29 and 2 economy tickets. I figured that they would let me and my wife sit in the suites and put the kids next to us. (boy was I wrong) As it got closer and it became evident that economy seats would not be available, I took my wife off the Y waitlist and put her on the J waitlist. That seat cleared the next day. 1 down and 3 more to go! About a week before departure I get a text saying that my sons suite ticket is ready to book, I quickly confirmed it! I then called up SQ saying that I don’t understand what is going on? I added myself to the waitlist before my son, and for some reason his seat cleared before mine; also I told them how do you expect to have a 2 year old travel by himself. They told me they would get back o me and by the next day my suite ticket was available to be booked. My daughters economy ticket cleared as well (I told them that she was traveling with us as well and they said they would see what they could do.! I was all set 2 suite tickets, 1 business and one economy. Again I figured it would be OK to move the economy child together with one of the adults.

Total miles used: 93500 x 2 for the suites
72250 for the business class ticket and 31875 for the economy ticket

There are 2 silk air flights daily from SIN to USM one leaves at 8:05 and the other at 10:25. Since I was arriving to SIN on Friday Morning and Shabbat was relatively early (around 6:30) and I am traveling with 2 kids I really needed a direct flight from SIN-USM and those are the only 2 options as the next one (which couldn’t be added to my reservation anyways) was at 4:30 and I would not be able to make it for Shabbat. Anyway they were able to confirm me 1 seat in business on the 8 o’clock flight and 2 seats in business for the 10 o’clock flight. I took those 3 for free (no extra miles) for the 2 suites tickets and the one business ticket. For my daughters coach ticket I had to buy a business seat (which I was happy to be able to do since expert flyer showed 0 seats available) which costed me $600. Not the greatest deal but I could live with it. I was all set to arrive in USM Friday morning at 11:05 and couldn’t be happier.

Again since I was arriving Friday morning and didn’t want to have to risk not being able to get food if I arrived late (Also since there was a chance that I would have to spend Shabbat in Singapore and would have been far from chabad) I decided to order 5 meat pom meals for Shabbat and 2 dairy ones for sat night

The rest of the trip I would get food from chabad.

I booked the Conrad koh samui for 4 nights two nights using weekend certificates and 2 nights using 160000 hilton honors points

Tuesday morning we would leave for CNX at 10 AM on the only direct flight from USM-CNX. I was able to get 1 award seat using 10k etihad points (which was 8k mr due to the transfer bonus) while waiting for other seats to open on the flight and seeing the price rising I decided to just pay for the flight at 175 per seat Xs 3 seats.

I stayed at the Le Meridien. The first night had C & P available so it was $55 plus 3500 SPG (a real bargain) The second night they only had executive suites available and the price was close to $300 so I decided to use 14k spg for that night.

For the flight from CNX to JFK; BA had lots of saver availability so I was able to get 4 seats on dragon air to fly non-stop from CNX to HK for 7500 avios plus $20 a person (another bargain)

I really wanted to stay at the W hong kong as it looks like an amazing hotel! But it just didn’t make sense for this trip as I was arriving late Thursday night so all I would be doing is sleeping there that night and then for Shabbat the W is too far to walk to the shul and reataurant. So I opted for the Sheraton. The paid rate was $250 per night so I decided to go with C & P which was 6k points plus $110 dollars per night

I was able to get 2 business seats and 2 first seats on the 4 o’clock cathay pacific flight on Sunday. Unfortunately that meant I would miss the Sunday night buffet at the JCC. But at least I would get ahome at a decent hour Sunday night and get a full nights sleep and avoid jet lag! I guess I will have to try the buffet a different time!

Cost of the flight home was 67500 AA miles X 2 for the 2 F seats and 70000 AA miles for 1 J seat and 105000 avios for the final business seat (wasn’t too happy about that but I had no choice)

Did they let the kids into the Suite?

Wondering the same (seems like they didn't from the way it was posted)

Since it's harder to get tickets for a family, I have thought about booking half of us in Y and half in J and switching during the flight so we could all sleep.

I also loved the info on the tickets.  I'm trying to plan an Asia trip for our family of five and don't think I'll be able to get it in the same class and am trying to figure out the best combo.

Day 1-Wednesday night June 29/ Thursday June 30
Flight is scheduled to leave at 8:55 (luckily it was delayed 15 minutes)
We get to the airport all excited at 7PM. I go to check-in and they start giving me issues since I have my daughter sitting by herself in economy. They want me to pay $4000 to upgrade her to business to sit with my wife. I tell them you guys are nuts, this is not my mistake this is Singapores mistake as all these tickets were booked over the phone by an agent and if this is not allowed why are they booking me and dragging me to the airport for nothing? The guy didn’t care and said that if I had the miles in the account he would let me upgrade. I would have done that but it takes until 3 AM to get the miles in my account. So he says they are working to see what they can do for me. Finally I tell the just upgrade anyone from economy to business and give me an extra economy seat. It took them forever as first they didn’t want to do that but they eventually agreed and we literally had to be escorted to the plane just as they were about to close the doors. I really think this was a poor job by Singapore. We had 2 suite tickets and a business ticket and there were 20 open business seats it wouldn’t have killed them to just put my daughter in business but they wouldn’t do that. Again this was their mistake as they booked the tickets for me that way….. Anyway end rant….

We get on the plane and I tell my wife go sit in the economy seat and I will talk to the crew on the plane to see what can be done to get her out of there. (my son came with me to the suites) I tried explaining them the case and even telling them that she was pregnant but they didn’t care. I told them that I would go to economy and let her come to the suites and they wouldn’t let that as well. They said in Singapore I could switch with her.

That being said once I was “stuck” in the suites I made sure to take advantage. I quickly ordered a johnny walker blue label. My son was too small to sit by himself so he was sitting with me and I had a whole empty suite right next to me and they wouldn’t let me bring my wife or daughter, even after they took away her business seat. I was really mad. Anyway the KSML came it was a decent Bornstein meal that was edible. Nothing like what the only 2 other suite people were eating. (That’s right there were 8 empty suite seats) I had some more blue label and then decided to sleep as I knew I would most likely be in coach on the next leg. They made the double bed for us and my son fell asleep right away. I went to check on my wife and daughter who were in the last row of the plane and they were sleeping somehow so I ieft them alone. Unfortunately we landed early in FRA and they woke me up asking me if I wanted breakfast. I couldn’t even have dairy at this point but wanted to sleep so I told them to pack it for me to go and I would eat it in the lounge when I arrived in FRA.

I arrived in FRA and they had someone waiting to escort me to the Lufthansa Senator lounge. I requested to talk to someone about getting the business class seat that I paid for back and again she said that she would call to see if I can do it with miles to upgrade the economy to business but anyway as of right now she blocked off the first row behind the suites of economy seats for me and we would get 4 economy seats together instead of the business seat plus the 2 suites seats. I told her to see what she can do in regard to getting me 2 business seats.

We got to the senator lounge which was pretty nice. I left my wife there and went to the jewish prayer room to pray shachrit. Before I knew it it was time for our flight to SIN. I finally gave up on getting the other business seat and decided that it was better to have the 4 economy since they would be near the suites and we could be together. I told my daughter to go with my wife and sit in the suites, but she said no, I want to sit with Daddy (yea my kids love me! and somehow this whole trip my son always found his way in first class!) so she came with me and my son went back to the suites.

For me it worked since basically it was like I slept Wednesday night and mow I am spending my Thursday being up. I kept myself busy, with wifi playing games and my phone, praying micha and even learning a little. Luckily I had lots of leg room since I was in the first row and I had two seats so I had plenty of space. I couldn’t have 4 together though as the arm rest for seats 1 & 4 wouldn’t go up. But still it was pretty good.
We finally landed at SIN also a little bit early at about 6:45 AM. I was scheduled for the 8:05 flight so we had to rush to the next gate which was pretty far away. My wife would have had access to the private room in SIN but we had no idea where it was and I didn’t want her getting lost so I told her to stay by the gate where her flight would take off. We could have moved to the 10:25 flight and flown all together but our bags were already on the plane so I decided to go to USM and wait for my wife at the airport. We took our flight which had a hermolis breakfast ( the same we got right before we landed in SIN) I didn’t really eat much from it but It was nice of them to provide a meal on a flight that was 1.5 hours long Finally at about 9:25 I landed in USM. (there Is a 1 hour time difference between SIN and Thailand)

i don't really understand what you are saying. But splitting up on the same plane was never an issue as long as she wasn't sitting in coach (after her first time in a premium cabin she got spoiled as well luckily she was in coach first from jfk to Fra and never had to go back)

Day 2: Friday July 1st 2016
Side note that I skipped in the last part: When we got to the gate for the SIN-USM flight I was told that there were 2 business class seats open on the later 10:25 flight which would let all 4 of us travel together and give us time to check out the private room in SIN but unfortunately my bags were already on the 8:10 flight and they said it was too late to switch and I should have asked right when I landed instead of waiting until I got to the new gate
Anyway….
I arrived in USM at about 8:55 AM. USM is an old fashioned airport so we got off on portable stairs and were seated in a bus. The bus takes you to the customs where we were put on an expedited line since we were in business class. The baggage claim is right near the customs so we quickly got our bags. My USM to CNX flight wasn’t really confirmed for some reason so I went to Bangkok airs office to get our tickets straightened out while waiting for my wife and son to come in on the next flight at 11:05. I also converted some U.S. dollars to baht at a nice rate of 34.15 baht to 1 US dollar
Before I knew it my wife’s flight came in and we got the baggage that was on her flight and were headed to the taxi area. A regular taxi from the airport to the Conrad costs 1000 baht but for 1500 baht I was able to get an SUV from the Conrad pick me up directly. They were able to fit all our luggage and all of us comfortably so I feel it was money well spent!
We arrived to the Conrad after an interesting ride there. I say interesting because the streets were very old fashioned and dirty and I was getting nervous about how bad this city looks. I also noticed as I would notice all trip even in Hong Kong that there were lots of 7-11s. After a long 50 minute ride, we finally arrived at the Conrad. We traveled over 24 hours to get here and boy was it worth it! As shady and dingy as the koh samui streets looked that is how beautiful the Conrad was.

We were told to sit down and they asked for our passports. They told us that since we are diamond members they upgraded us and gave us the best room they have which is all the way up affording the best view that they have and a more private pool. (All rooms are the same size though) Unfortunately that would mean that we were further away from the pool and the breakfast restaurant but in the end it would be worth it as we had complete privacy in our pool.

Right away they took all our luggage to be brought to the room. In order to get around the hotel, since it is a large property you need to take a “buggy” They were pretty good with this service throughout our stay.

Buggy

We got to the room which was really very nice as you can see! We unpacked a little and being that it was 1:30 the kids were hungry! I made them turkey sandwiches and we were ready to try out the pool!  (the turkey and food from pom arrived in good condition still cold)

Bedroom

Hot Tub

We spent the next couple of hours swimming then had to get ready for Shabbat which was earlyish at about 6:30. In order to heat up the pom meals I brought a hot plate with me since I did not want to rely on the hotel to heat it up. It fits perfectly in my suitcase flat on the bottom. The only problem with it is that it weighs 20 lbs but when you are flying first class no one is weighing your bags!  For the kids I got them chicken nuggets as there meal to share and I put it on the hotplate which popped as soon as I brought it in.

Pool in room

View of ocean from pool

Having no choice I re-double wrapped the meal and gave it to room service to warm. They brought it back opened saying that they couldn’t put it in the microwave without opening it. Great I had to throw it out! Luckily it was only one of my 5 meals, either way the kids were exhausted and fell asleep without eating. (they woke up in middle of the night and had a snack). I then went to the chef and told him what is going on? I told you guys not to open the seal? (BTW the people here are really bad with English) He apologized and assured me that it would not happen again. So I gave him my four remaining meals and instructed him when to bring them to me.

Besides for the pools, this hotel is very kid-friendly, they provided us with a bathtub for the kids, kids shampoo, and even a potty.
We showered, lit candles in the room (small traveler ones) prayed and at exactly 7 PM as we requested our meals came. They weren’t heated perfectly but at least they were sealed. We ate quickly and passed out!

As I mentioned before the kids woke up at midnight but after some snacks they went back to sleep for the night.

Wow, sorry that trip seems like such a schlepp despite all the premium cabins. Can't be easy to do all that travelling with kids, but you seem to still have had a great time! That room and private pool is just WOW! So you booked a standard room with points and they upgraded you to the top level suite upon arrival? No emailing beforehand to confirm anything?

of course it's a shlep but honestly it's a shlep even without kids and I am so happy I brought them as they had a great time. Regarding the room I booked the base points room; the hotel actually emailed me asking me if I need transportation. I told them that I did and I requested kosher breakfast and asked for an upgrade. They confirmed the kosher and said that the upgrade is based on availability but they notated my reservation that I want an upgrade.

But again all rooms are the same size and all have the same pool. so an upgrade just means a room with a better view

Understood, I'm a big one-stop-only guy, but to get to Thailand, I might have to cave one day. Hehe.
Did I read that correctly - EVERY room has a private pool!? Where did they get the Kosher breakfast from?

yes every room has a private pool. All rooms are the same size. Though some pools are more private than others. The breakfast I will cover soon but it's from Chabad

+100

I seriously could not imagine doing it the way you did, letting alone actually doing it that way, but you made it and that what counts... Mostly :)

Conrad KS is absolutely gorgeous. Still ranks as one of the top hotels I've ever had the pleasure of staying at. Rooms are stunning, service is great, kosher brekkie from Chabad, no charging to heat up meals, and all rooms have a huge plunge pool. To think I only paid 36k HH per night makes me reminisce with pleasure.

how would you have done it if you would have done it? Lol

I tell you they don't speak such good English but they do not know how to say "no" I agree this is definitely the best hotel I ever stayed at.

yes every room has a private pool. All rooms are the same size. Though some pools are more private than others. The breakfast I will cover soon but it's from Chabad
Cool that's really awesome! Surprised they get food from Chabad, seems to be 50 minutes away per Gmaps. 36K!!??? Wowzers, it's gone up quite a lot since then.
