Google Pixel and Pixel XL Phones
« on: October 04, 2016, 09:32:24 PM »
They were just launched today and seem like pretty solid phones. Thoughts?

Price stings a bit. Still haven't figured out which carriers they work with. They look promising.
Not sure why they needed such a big bezel.

I was also shocked at the price points but they do seem aligned with all the premium phones on the market. Seems will work with all major us carriers.

The problem is I think iphones are overpriced as well and Galaxy phones can be had for cheaper than their retail price. And there are plenty of high end devices that you can get for a lot less (HTC 10, Nexus 6P, OnePlus3, etc ) Meanwhile nothing specifically stands out as better than the rest on these devices- but I think they are really focusing on software. I'm glad they're offering a small version.
Hope we start seeing some reviews soon.

Where did you see that? I haven't been able to confirm that anywhere. Even on pixel.google.com it just says Verizon for now.

They are targeting the iPhone specifically. That is a problem as the phone is still Nexus quality, not iPhone:

Only 2 years is software updates (and those can be delayed for months - see Nexus 6P). Compare to the iPhone 5 running iOS 10.
No waterproofing.
No Optical Image Stabilisation.

Here are the things is could have had that the iPhone doesn't:
Not huge bezels! Or at least put actual stereo sound there. (The phones are made by HRC after all, and look like a A10/10 cross)
SD card? (In my dreams)
Wireless charging (glass back...)?

HTC 10 is probably still my favorite device out this year.
Galaxy is a good device if you don't mind touchwiz and the V20 seems promising.
I see this device as a step in a direction they want to be heading to.

Same here. Though there's something new coming from HTC on Sprint soon that's going to be even better :)

The 6p was dropped from the play store. I don't expect these phones to stay at this price point for very long, they don't have anything to separate them from the mid-range premium phones like opo 3 or axon 7, which go for $400

Though if google really wants to go the way of Apple they won't be lowering the price anytime soon.

The real problem with anything Google makes that is"new" is this:

The whole concept of "Oh, this is not making us as much money as we had hoped, let's sunset it and replace it with something else!" *really* annoys me.
Google Chat? Nope, now it's..
Google Talk? Nope, now it's..
Google Voice? Nope, now it's..
Google Hangouts? Nope, now it's..
Allo and Duo?

What makes this more then incremental to the latest Nexus, hardware or software wise?
And why does that justify the price jump?
