you might need to cover it with tin foil since its a normal surface used for cooking during the week

Common misconception. Garuf vkatum (covering the heat source) only helps for the chashash shemah yechate. The problem you are describing is mechzi kimivashel which is not solved via garuf vkatum. I would SAY whether your setup is mutar
