Microsoft Security Error?

I just had something strange happen to my computer.  I clicked to a webpage, and another tab opened almost immediately.  This new page said it was from Microsoft and looked official enough that it could have been them. And an overlay page popped up on top, that I've attached.

Probably nothing serious you just visited a shady site the popup is a scam
Run adwcleaner to be sure any adware is removed

Is this legit?  I haven't looked up the microsoft phone number listed yet, but I intend to.


My computer has been slow lately - mostly in spurts.  That is that it seems to work ok, and then will freeze a few seconds or open web pages really slowly.  And then it pretty much goes back to baseline.

I have Avast! And it's been doing it's thing.
I recently deleted my cookies.


I'll run adwcleaner now.  Thanks.  Do I keep that in addition to the Avast?  I see how the adwcleaner works.  yes I do.

I assumed it was a scam, that's why I posted here for advice.
