The only ways you can upgrade/be upgraded in those fare buckets:

1) Submit a bid in their online upgrade auction system (YMMV, this is not always offered.  Pull up the details of your booking on El Al's site and it should pop up with the option if you are eligible).

2) Free operational upgrade (i.e. both economy and economy plus overbooked)

3) Through the call center, you can "buy up" to a more expensive fare bucket which lets you use points to upgrade.  99% of the time is prohibitively expensive.

4) Upgrade while you're physically on board the plane, which I think costs $700+ (per leg, of course).  A little disappointing to spend so much and not even get to use the King David Lounge if your flight is ex-TLV.

That's about all there is...

I see that ElAl offers the option of "Last minute upgrades" with points. Seems like to North America it would be 100 pts to move up one category and 150 pts to move up two. Has anybody had experience successfully using points to upgrade for this low rate (offered in 48hrs preflight)? I I'm the only matmid member in the family can I use my points to upgrade other family members (some are on a different reservation)? TIA

https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlyer/UtilizingPoints/Pages/Last-Minute-Upgrade.aspx (not guaranteed) their guaranteed upgrades via points are quite expensive

I have used it several times - although it says 48 hours, ElAl reaches out to eligible passengers typically within the two hours prior takeoff and offer them to upgrade for a small amount of points. They look at fare class and status tier to decide who gets priority

You need to have status - it says minimum silver but on busy lines like NY you likely don't do the cut below Platinum. And you can't do it for family members, even on the same flight

Good to know. Which fare class do you fly on?

The Last Minutes must be Y/S/M (or a couple other fare buckets if you have high status) PLUS Matmid status of some kind.  Won't work for the el cheapo fares :-)
