Yes, drilling is necessary, but from the inside of your cabinet. I have these and use it for the drawers at the bottom of my china cabinet

Having kids you don't have much of a choice you gotta lock up the china cabinet. Now any adhesive is a joke, my kids will pull until it pops open.
The reason why I chose a lock like this is because the lock is completely concealed and you cannot see the lock (yes, it is drilled into the inside of the drawer, but who cares)
