Was the tire driven at all when it was flat?  The metal rim of the wheel rim can give the appearance of a sliced cut on the sidewall.
Nope , only thing i can think of was parked slightly on curb for 20 minutes

If the tire had been flat when you drove it up on the curb to park it, the wheel rim could have sliced the sidewall at that time.

How much thread is on the other front tire? Pretty good or like new?  Not the best, but ok to replace only one.
Pretty worn out?  Do you have a regular sized spare tire already?  Other front tire can be your spare and get two new front tires.

So how about switching out the new spare for the other tire and just live with two new mismatched front tires?
When the back tires need replacing you can put these mismatched ones back there and put the two new ones in front.

I would need a spare though..
Thinking to buy a new one and then use the spare and use the remaining  used tire as spare

Or my other option would be to replace it with a used one if that makes sense?

Your front good tire that has only 28k miles on it would be a perfect spare! The current spare in your trunk (which you said is also a new tire) would now go on the front, as well as the one new tire that you would buy to replace the flat tire.

Do the threads of the new spare tire in your trunk match the 28k mile tire on your front?  If not, then your tires are going to have mismatched threads anyway.  A good used tire you can get for $40 or so, then replace both front ones when need be.

That being said, I'd still go with using the new spare in the trunk for Heaven's sake!  Why keep a new tire in the trunk as a spare?!  Buy a cheaper used tire just to sit in the trunk.  You may never use it and if you do at some point in the future, it will only be for a short distance most likely until you repair the one on your car.

Remember if you get two new tires they go on the back not the front.

O ok thanks...
Can get used for a 3rd of the price as new, but don't know if it's worth compromising the ride quality

GIYF but the main reason is hydroplaning. Good tires on front cause over-steer and on the back causes under-steer. Would you rather have your car go straight or spin out?  :)

Machlokes regarding front or back depending on mechanic, I believe. Arguments for both sides, yet mechanics are pretty opinionated one way or the other.  Maybe it depends on the season?

If you do buy two new ones, do what you can if you have the room to store the 28k one as a good spare if needed.  It most probably won't fit in the trunk's spare wheel well.

Correct but don't listen to the mechanics go right to the manufacture.
True story. I once worked with a mechanic and showed him how to do something (I was the rookie). He told me has been doing it his way for twenty years. My response was you have been doing it wrong for the past twenty years.  ;)

Thanks,  I'm thinking I'm probably just better off with one used one, unless I'm compromising anything? as the rest of my tires have 8 "32 left (rear have a little more)  according to a tire shop took it to
