That's the danger with extreme arguments. You can argue that the current extreme is bad. But to argue that the other extreme is the ideal is foolish too. As always, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

I don't mean to elevate this to serious discussion. I just meant it would be nice to have a simpler tax code. And if the lawyers and accountants who focus on that now will be freed up to do other work, society will surely benefit from their refocus.

I completely agree that its hard to envision a tax system that runs without some people making a career working on taxes.
I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

Yah, my response essentially is that we used to have a much simpler tax code, so we could just revert to say the IRC of 1954, or even the IRC of 1939.  It's just that the reason we made it more complex is that everyone was cheating the tax code by using the million loopholes. You need the complexity.

Unless you scrap the entire thing, and come up with a different paradigm.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Yah, but my point to that is that there really isn't a simpler paradigm that also gets us the revenue and policy we want.

Where incumbents say there isn't a way innovators find a way. Maybe a new way can't meet all the constraints but can meet most of the ones you have and some others that you don't. The status quo mindset is the problem

reminds me of this from "disorder in the court"
ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?
WITNESS: No.
ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?
WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.
ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?
WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law.

That wasn't what I meant.  I meant the fairness policies that the government wants.

Who determines fairness? Politicians? Bureaucrats? Power mongers?

Well, that question is not limited to tax policy, is it? The answer is all of the above, and it's a better system than any other devised by man in the history of the world.

Same reason other countries with dropping birth rates are. Higher birth rates are beneficial for society, social security, etc.
And here is what Spain is doing about it:
