Most woman and girls that I know are always uncomfortable taking taxis/Ubers alone.  Especially at night
That's a different story.

I get asked about 10-15 times a year by friends and family to either pick them up or drop them off at the airport.

My question is, with the advent of services like Uber and Lyft where you can have a car within minutes by just a few taps on your phone, should this still be a common favor? I can understand that before these services, it was extraordinarily inconvenient to take a taxi from the airport. At busy airports it required waiting in long lines with all your luggage for a cab, so it was reasonable to ask someone for a favor.

Granted, there are a few exceptions. Elderly parents, guests coming from overseas for a special visit, a "choshuve" person etc. But the vast majority of these requests do not fall into one of these categories.

This question came to mind when I recently did one of these "favor runs" to pick someone up from an evening flight, the flight took and extra HOUR to taxi to the terminal due to some reason or another, and the trip took me 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. All this while constantly getting shooed away by airport personnel for waiting out front. Don't get me wrong, I am happy to do a favor and I had a great chat afterwards in the car, but I also had lots of things to do that night, and this literally took away four hours of my time.

So back to my question, is it time that people recognize that Uber and Lyft have taken over airport "favors", and always use those as a first option? Is it time to tell this to people who ask for these favors?
Been saying it for years. I used to love in queens. It's about than $20 from/to jfk and asking someone to sit in traffic there and back to save the $20 that you just dropped for some trinket in the airport for your little sister makes no sense

I don't get asked often, but I don't mind doing favors for family especially if it's far and it saves them $100.

Location makes a huge difference.

From Monsey, an Uber will run over $100.00. So usually a family member-in-law will do the drop off/pick up.

From my parents' home in LA, an Uber is only $25-$30. If the timing is inconvenient in any way, we happily Uber.

I was kind of surprised that parents are allowing their kids to travel like that.

In CLE it's $23.

I'd never ask someone to spend over an hour of their time for me to save $23. And yet it's always being asked in Whatsapp groups that I'm in and I truly don't understand. If you can afford to fly you can afford the $23...

/.02
It's $30 usually and with kids and luggage people often need XL which is $50. Also at CLE some Ubers require pickup at the parking garage which is a pain to get to. The biggest problem in CLE is not having an Uber available to the airport in the morning and scheduling one doesn't always work.

There are lady drivers in uber/lyft as well.

Also, i think they should be more reliable then any other cab since you can rate the driver and see their rating too.

Either way, I never heard of one story about an uber driver except one where the actual driver was beaten up by a drunk passenger.

so I googled and found out what you are even talking about, and so far the "plenty of stories" are from drivers not passengers.

I pick up our parents and/or kids.

I only ask to be picked-up or dropped-off if I'm leaving my car to someone. I hate asking for favors, I'd rather always be on the giving end than the receiving end.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I think picking up a guest/family member is a great way to demonstrate your excitement to see them. To be fair, as a 9-5'er, I guess my free time may not be worth as much.

We used to walk our babysitters back home at night due to security concerns. Since the advent of Uber, we've decided it is easier to do that.

However, we realize that isn't safe either. So now we hire a security guard to follow the Uber driver in their own car, and I chase behind the security guard on foot in case he is a criminal. I know what you're thinking, but there are a ton of lights in Crown Heights, I can usually keep up.
