israel summer 2011 family trip
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:16:40 AM »
Hi,
you were all very helpful last year when we traveled the along  north east.
This year we found cheap tickets to Israel from june 20 till July 26.
I've read all the forums on Israel but couldn't find nothing for large family trips and ideas.
We will be renting a 9 seater ( thanks MENDOUL ) called chaim gross
We also want to go for 2 days to golan and looking for ideas for trips and lodging (family of 9 )
We will be staying in jerusalem
thanks all for your help

The Golan rocks!
-Banias Waterfall
-Nimrod's Fortress
-Harmon Ski Lifts
-Har Bental
-Jordan River Rafting
-Golan Heights Winery
-Tons of amazing hiking options (always stay on the marked paths!!!)

We based ourselves in the Holiday Inn Tiberias for $30 on pointbreaks.

i am finalizing tomorrow but i got the cheapest quote for a 9 seater (manual ) from driver.rent.car@gmail.com. phone number is 972722333090
chaim gross said he could most probably give the same with hertz.
five star travel gave me through Avis a pretty good quote too. not sure which i'll be taking.
for the 9 seater they want around 1100 all incl. for 13 days
Does anyone know what gps from here will work in israel?

If you google family itineraries israel... you will come up with many ideas. Our experience as a family in Tveryah during bain hazemanim was not good. Find a tzimmer out of town or central to all your activities. The traffic and crowds were unreal. We waited over 1.5 hours for food at night. Take a tzimmer and bring your own food.

we took a family trip three summers ago and it was amazing!  defnitely plan on spending time in the golan/gallil. 2 days is not enough imho.  the things that the kids enjoyed the most were the water hikes and rafting on the jordan river.
also, jeeping up north was 10 times better than jeeping in the judean hills.  we also splurged and stayed in the kinar it is expensive, but you are right on the kineret and the food is good.

we spent a memorable shabbos in tzfas as well - it was shabbos nachamu and it was very lively!

aside from the obvious, some of the other things we did were:

temple institute - good for the nine days
techelet factory - we didn't buy any but it was interestng
a tefillin factory somewhere in meah shearim
kabbalas shabbos in belz shul
visits to various gedolim
menara cliffs cable car
gush etzion memorial - very moving

I really don't get the attraction of jeeping. It's basically a very bumpy car ride

jeeping in the desert was a bumpy car ride, jeeping in the golan was a tour of different orchards with the jeep zooming up and down hills and splashing through streams. we stopped a couple of times to jump into natural pools of water, we had a great driver and the kids were  "laughing their heads off"

Do you think that roller coasters remind you of jerky flights?

I guess ur not driving the Jeep fast enough to make it thrilling! ;)

I think the newcomers guide (they have a site) has info for R Chaim Kanievsky.

We saw R' Chaim Kanievsky at Mincha in the shul right by his house. If you know the right people you can get in for a private meeting/bracha, but this was enough for us.  We also knocked on R' Shteiman's door, he has a gabbai who told us to wait a bit - eventually he let us in.  R' Shteiman was farhering a class, which was interesting to watch, then he gave us each a quick bracha.  R' Elyashiv gives a shiur somewhere in meah shearim, some of us went to the shiur which was very "lebedik".  R' Wosner was in yerushalaim for a shabbos when we were there, i believe he gave a shiur in a shul called shevet levi near rechov shmuel hanavi.  We saw the Belzer Rebbe in shul after kabbalos shabbos, everyone runs by, but i believe if you are a guest - you can stop and "say hello"! R' Yitzchok Soloveichik is almost always in his Yeshiva learning so if you want to talk in learning with a gadol that is the the place to go.   You basically need to ask around - everyone has a friend of a friend who knows where and when to be etc....

one interesting place to see some rabbonim was motzai tisha b'av at the kosel.  There are a number of Rebbe's that come to say kiddush levana and tons of bochurim following them around!
