Is there a reason for the limit ?
A number of months ago when they upped it to 256 from a hundred there were many theories as to how they came to that number... but the general consensus was there's no reason for a limit other than everytime they up it, it'll  be exciting... although many thought out of competition with telegram it would go to atleast 1000, if not unlimited.

What is the latest working method to have more than 256 members ? Those from Google don't work

The phone that died was a Nexus 5x. Currently using my old Nexus 5 for now, but it only has my chat history from over a year ago. Nothing recent

There's an Android update that came out a couple months ago, but I just downloaded it a couple days ago. A day after I downloaded it, I was using my phone and then it froze and just turned off by itself. Now it's stuck in boot loader. Apparently many Nexus 5x were affected by this and there's nothing you can do to fix it.

Unless you have a way to access the phone internal memory unfortunately not.

( That's why I'm such a fan of Telegram)
