Point Purchase Business Expense
« on: March 23, 2017, 02:47:53 PM »
Are point purchases, for hilton, IHG etc, eligible for business expense if I redeem the points for business travel?

Sorry if this has been covered, but I couldn't find any comments on this. I'm traveling for my business and it's cheaper to buy points to redeem for my hotel stay than actual paid stay.

Thanks

Why would it not be a business expense?

A business expense eligible for tax purposes?  I'm not aware.

If it is money spent for business why not

1) it may not meet the ordinary test

2) if getting points is taxable buying them may not be deductible

that being said you would probably be ok if it isnt a huge expense

how would you prove the purchase? unless you are doing it through a TA or something and then they can just give you a regular receipt. who cares how it was booked?
