Sixt terrible customer service!

I reserved a car with Sixt a ATL for one of my Father's workers, and prepaid the rental being that it was a few dollars cheaper and my father was paying for it either way.

The guy got into an accident a day before he was supposed to leave and was rushed to the hospital, and therefore couldn't make the trip at all.

I explained the situation to Sixt, and even sent in a letter from the hospital but they refuse to refund the rental.

Is this even normal?

Nonrefundable is nonrefundable. There is a reason it's cheaper. Because they didn't issue a courtesy refund they have terrible customer service?

I don't get it. Amex has insurance that will cover that? Since it doesn't seem you have grounds for a dispute.

Doesn't Amex offer travel insurance for $25 per booking? That should cover this..

CMIIW but I pretty sure Most Airlines would refund even a non refundable ticket in these circumstances with a Dr. note.

Many airlines clearly state in their rules that they don't refund with Dr. notes, only if there is a death in the family etc.

That's what "full" travelers insurance is for

My own experience with Sixt....renting dinged up cars from a dimly lit garage where it is hard to see / verify every damaged area and then being accused, upon return of car, of causing more damage.  Was able to not get charged for the damage, but it made for a  very stressful end to a nice vacation.

This experience was in the US? What you described is a typical rental facility in Israel.

Update: I messaged Sixt on FB, and they told me to email  the Customer service dept. Here is their reply,

"Dear Mr. ...,
 
At Sixt service is our ultimate priority. This is why we are always there for you if you have any questions.
 
We cancelled the reservation and waived the cancellation fee and credit the relevant amount to the credit card account.

If there is anything else we can do for you at any time, please contact us. We are always at your service.
 
Get well soon Mr. ..'
 
Best regards"
