Trying to use SPG to get to JNB, South Africa (2 tickets from MIA)...Am I wrong that the best option would be marriott hotel + flight with UA (90K SPG + 20k SPG for 132k UA miles, additional 30k UA miles and 7 nights in cat. 1-5 hotel)? So for a total of 110k SPG I would get 2 RT flights (economy), plus 7 nights in Marriott cat. 1-5.
On the other hand, would love to spend a night in Europe (Paris or Amsterdam preferred) on the way. Any way to get around Flying Blue surcharges, and do they allow overnight stops? I've read booking AF or KLM on Alaska=no surcharges, but can't seem to find any dates with availability (including searching JFK as origin city), but there are flights available directly thru KLM...If I call alaskan would they be able to find these flights?
Open to any other ideas, including great value for business class. Thanks.
