flight cancelled help!

my flight to milan on AA198 cancelled.  its now stopover in madrid landing in Milan MOnday 6pm!

Airport agents are usually better at finding alternate options, but try calling as well and research your desired options.

I called but all other options through AA were booked.  I found direct flights with United though paid in cash for 4 and points for one.

Will now have to get my money back from AA.

Good luck with that. Did you get anything in writing authorizing that?

For next time, never lay out money expecting to get reimbursed.
You should have told AA that they need to get your on those UA flights. As Dan mentioned, they might not be able to do it on the phone but the airport agents can do it if they want to (although they may not be "required" to, so be polite and firm).

Are you referring to the agents at the airport? If so, there wasn't enough time as AA was at JFK and United at EWR.

Also, I don't expect AA to reimburse me for my additional costs.  Just want a  refund of what I paid AA.

What was the reason for cancellation, you might be eligible for EU 261/2004 compensation.

AA at JFK should be able to rebook you on United from EWR.

I imagine AA would reimburse you for your ticket which you didn't fly if they changed the schedule and you told them you couldn't fly with that schedule.

I don't think it applies here because it's departing from a US airport and operated by a US airline.  Though now I'm wondering, it's a BA flight operated by AA would that meet their definition?

They never gave me a reason for the cancellation.
