Home Phone Service in NY or NJ (Landline)
« on: May 24, 2011, 05:18:07 PM »
I am currently paying about $70 a month for unlimited USA phone service for my home in the New York area. I am sick of getting ripped off. Does anyone know of a company that has it for less? I haven't changed my pkan in like 10 years so I am assuming they have cheaper plans by now....

Obi/Google?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

How would I use that with 5 different phones in my house? I need multiple phone locations at all times throughout the house..... I think my best bet is one of the jewish phone companies, cable, or VoIP (Vonage or something like that). Anyone have ideas?

Afaik as long as you physically disconnect the phone line coming in outside the house then if you plug an ooma or an obi in to any phone jack it will share its dialtone with the rest of the jacks in the house...

I've had Vonage for 3 years with few complaints.  You can use it on multiple phones if you get a cordless phone set that only requires 1 jack (most of them these days).  It has some great features like forwarding to your cell phone if you aren't home or lose power.

Obi/Google and Ooma don't offer 911 services. If I am using it as my main home line, I would hate not to have that service. Additionally, all those services need a decent internet connection. If I get an internet connection by itself, it comes out very costly. As per "side incomer", I have looked into Xchange Telecom - it seems to be a Jewish owned company. They have this "lifeline" product. For people on various government programs they are eligible for subsidized phone service as well. I called them at 347-772-1988 and an application was sent to me. They have plans ranging from $1/month to $28/month. I will let you know when I get the service!

Thank you for clarifying that. You are right: Ooma does provide E911. Ooma is a great option, but you still need a decent internet connection for it. From what I have seen so far, this Lifeline program (for those eligible, obviously) is the only thing without having to rely on an internet connection. Where I am located, I don't have a decent internet connection to rely on.... If anyone has any other ideas, I am still open for suggestions. There is no contract required with this Xchange Lifeline Service, nor is there a cost to sign up, so I am available to switch at any time!!!
