Why didn't they offer more before forcing people to leave? I'm sure someone would have volunteered for the right price.
Agreed. $1k? Everyone has their breaking point.
Also why did they board everyone first then decide to start removing people?

I think the part that bothers me is that they removed the passengers to make room for their own staff. Why should their employees get preference over paying customers? I understand the law is on their side when it comes to making these decisions but it seems a bit absurd that they can make the decision that they don't want to lose money from a future flight being short staffed but it's okay to remove random individuals. I would be much more accepting with a scenario of a simple paying customer overbooking than this scenario.

Agreed. I think the employees situation only surfaced after they boarded the plane. This whole situation is either being portrayed horribly by the media, or was just not handled by the right person...

I agree, once they allowed everyone to board the plane it was out of line to force people off, they should have offered more compensation and only forced people off as a last resort. DL was giving people more than $1k over the weekend, there was really no reason UA couldn't have gone up to $1.5k before forcing people off.

Funny, scrolled by this article from TPG, and he seems to leave out all mentions of the employee factor. Also seems a bit of a different angle on the whole picture.

Legal requirement for "involuntary" deined boarding is $1300 cash - not vouchers

Now we need to figure out how to manufacture a involuntary denial for boarding

Yes I was talking about cash. It's better for UA to give more comp then to have to deal with a PR mess like this, especially soon after the "leggings" fiasco.

I've read 4 articles so far, and only one has mentioned the employees...There may be some facts amiss here

Na, this week my friend had 2 cleints flying, there were kept waiting at the check-in counter till cut-off time with an excuse that there was a problem with their tickets, their flights were definitely oversold. No it's wasn't Elal (who does this all the time) but it was OS & you guessed it, UA

Delta devalues their points, AA has 0 availability, and UA abuses their passengers. Love these domestic airlines!!

Better angle of the Air Marshals pulling him from his seat and his bloodied mouth as he's dragged down the isle.

Does united have a policy of limiting the reimbursement to $800?

I hope so, otherwise it will be kind of hard to explain why the turned to involuntary removals without reaching the highest offer.
