Best use of UR points to get to Kenya (NBO)
« on: April 11, 2017, 11:39:01 AM »
We have tons of Chase UR points. We live near NYC airports. We want to go on a safari in Kenya. What is the most cost efficient use of points to fly Luftansa Premium economy or a different carrier in business to arrive in NBO?

NYC-NBO roundtrip
Luftansa premium economy or all other options in business class.

any and all knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciated.
-Josh

OP mentioned two things: has tons of UR points, and looking for most cost efficient way to get from NYC to NBO in a premium cabin.

I don't know what going rates are for UR or SPG points, but I do know that UR points are much easier to accumulate (and in the instant case, seem to be readily available).

The other issue which is not addressed by awardhacker is Surcharges. I don't know what OZ charges, but I do know that UA has no fuel surcharges. So it might be more cost efficient to transfer UR to UA, rather than other options involving SPG and other programs.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

What about YQ?

I presume KE would use AF, KL and KQ metal.

Thank you very much for the feedback! I did look at award hacker. I did see united business @160k w low fees. I also saw KE business @120k w HUGE FEES (~$1800.00 per).

I figured if there are any people on this planet with the knowledge or inside information on how to get to Southern Africa for a safari in the most "point efficient manner", it'd be the folks on this forum. So thank you again for the feedback!

Here's my thinking on getting there.... (again, please speak up if u've done this trip b4 or have a strong recommendation one way or the other) 3 options I feel are doable.
1. Lufthansa prem ecom purchased w UR @ 1.5 points/$ ($1900 or 128k UR booked w CSR). I've heard lift prem Econ is quite spacious and comfortable. 39" pitch, 19" width
2. United partners @ 160k each w low fees $50-$100 per. Some shorter connections have the lousy buz class which is coach row w blocked out middle seat. 31" pitch, 17" width.  I feel luft prem ecom would be far superior than those seats. The advantage w this option is the longer segment flights would be superior to luft prem Econ.
3. This is least likely choice for us. KE at 120 UR & $1800 per. Fees r too high, I prob wouldn't use this method.
Decisions....Decisions...

KLM via Amsterdam to JRO (Kilimanjaro) is another option

UR transfers to FlyingBlue. Where you can book premium economy or business on AF, KL and KQ. 160k for premium economy, 200k for Business. You will pay fees, but those will usually be lower than KE, especially if you get a DL flight for the transatlantic segment.

Also you can use your UR points to book the Safari. Search activities using the "JRO" airport code
