Does the pass owner need to be with the group in order to use the lifetime benefit? Or they don't usually check

Yes, the pass holder needs to be present.
Normally you can get by without needing to show id, e.g. if you don't have it handy and they don't want to wait while you try to find it.  But if you present a seniors pass and you look 25 then I imagine they'll want to see your ID :)

I haven't looked at SD, but to clarify about the senior pass, $10/$20 is the current price.

Figured as much :) but worth a try. Debating whether to sign up my dad anyways since it's only $20
