El Al nightmare - what are my rights?
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:32:49 PM »
I booked a ticket from Israel to New York. It was a 9AM flight to land in JFK 2PM EST. I thought that would be enough time to get in after luggage and everything for Shabbas because I live only 30 min from JFK.
However, right before boarding I realized my flight was going to Newark not JFK. I was so confused I thought I had made a mistake in booking my ticket so I quickly got on my computer and checked and saw I did in fact book a ticket to JFK not Newark. So I quickly ran to the boarding desk and told them that I had booked my ticket to JFK not Newark. They told me that a few hours prior to the flight the JFK flight was cancelled and they put everyone on the JFK flight onto the Newark flight, which was leaving at the same time.
The only problem was, was that I live very far from Newark and I had planned for someone to meet me at JFK not Newark and I couldn't find anyone to pick me up from there so close to shabbas with Friday rush hour traffic. I kept complaining to the lady and she kept telling me there is nothing we can do.
I ended up getting on the flight and thanks to global entry I was outa there quickly an took public transportation to get home and I got home minuted before Shabbas. This was absolutely outrageous to me. It's one thing to switch my flight to a different flight to JFK, but to completely switch me to another airport/ another state without even telling me, absolutely outrageous. Especially ELAL who apparently is so sensitive to "Jewish tradition" didn't care about people's plans for shabbas.

Any advice on what I can do for compensation?
Thanks!

That's why you don't take flights that lands so close to shabbes

It happens to say in shu"a that such travel is prohibited by Jewish law.

If your main point was the cost of transportation, good and fine. But if your issue is that because of the time the diversion cost you in terms of shabbos observance, that is your fault not theirs.
Sorry if I'm being very blunt.

Don't think you're entitled to more than cost of cab to jfk
Sometimes it doesn't pay to save money.

i think the concern is that the original flight was cancelled and he ended up in a different state. if a passenger were to request that change, he would be hit with a $200 penalty plus difference in fair plus plus plus or whatever LY charges. aside from the inconvenience, i assume he is looking for something that shows they advised of the change in plans etc... and possibly gave an option to cancel or agree to new routing. now that it happened last minute, he is looking for some type of compensation so its probably right that he can get the cab fare reimbursed and maybe a little courtesy token towards future travel but that is highly unlikely from LY (IME)

When you were arguing with them, what was your end goal? Was there another flight that you wanted to get on? Or were you hoping they uncanceled the flight specifically for you?

Also you prob don't have much rights.

I asked to switch to a flight Motzei Shabbas to jfk and they said it was booked and I must take that flight or we can rebook till after pesach but the point was I was supposed to be back before the end of pesach.
