If you tried returning 60 days after purchase & you were denied so you filed a claim with Amex they wouldn’t deny because you could’ve returned on day 30. If the item is final sale & you prove that to them there’s no reason you’ll be denied. Macy’s has a 180 (could be even 360) day return policy so if the receipt doesn’t say final sale there’s no reason they’d approve your claim.

They also claimed to contact the merchant when I wanted to return a pair of glasses purchased on eBay. Rep said they contacted eBay.com & was told it’s a limited edition item. After calling back & speaking to a claim adjuster, I was told it was denied because they’re eyeglasses which is custom, after explaining & proving it wasn’t claim was approved. Speak to a claim adjuster & you’ll be able to figure it all out.

How does the "restocking fee" option work? I assume it covers returns that require paid shipping. Does Amex just cover the return shipping cost?

No, they don't cover return shipping. They cover restocking fee.
So. For Amazon returns you cannot claim anything unless the window closed.
