Lost package without insurance

I recently sent a valuable envelope via USPS with a tracking number, but it got lost thru them. I wasn't aware of their insurance option.
Is there any way or any idea how to minimize my loss?

Not much you can do but you can try to go to your post office and talk to the postmaster, but unlikely that they'll be able to find it without a tracking number.

It's never a good idea to trust the USPS with anything valuable, especially if the package is going from or to NYC...

Thinks like that we learn from experience. its the first time I use USPS with tracking information, and definitely the last time as well.
i've used in the past UPS and FEDEX, but for this package their price was a $6 difference, so I wanted to save, but it turned out that this savings didn't take me to far  with a loss of $500!!!

It's never a good idea to trust the USPS with anything valuable, especially if the package is going from or to NYC...

UPS/Fedex anything remotely valuable.  $100 insurance is free, additional insurance is not expensive, and you can track your item.

USPS in NYC is a mismanaged disaster. People only use them when they have absolutely no choice. Some examples:

• The wait time on line in NYC post offices can often be upwards of 30 minutes.
• They just deliver a notice saying that no one was home instead of actually attempting to deliver the package.
• The notice says your package is at the PO, but they have a hard time finding it even with the tracking #.
• The employees are all fat lazy people who have no performance-based incentives and are all sitting around, working as slow as they can, waiting for closing
• time.

Yes, I never really got how they can lose your stuff and don't have to pay if you didn't buy insurance.
If you pay a company to take something somewhere, and they lose it, how is there not liability?

They can do it because they are the government, and you can only sue the government when they waive sovereign immunity. The do not waive it for losing packages.
