Anyway to transfer the name of the booking to someone else? Whether to give it away for free or to have a sibling use it with swapping the names?

I have once successfully changed a ticket name on united, called Customer support saying that I made a mistake with the spelling of my name, and it worked. Last name stayed the same

Not a bad idea, probably a better shot with that reason then asking to change the name?

What makes you say that, they only have 1-2 hours before they realize noone is taking that seat.

Doubt it, from what I can remember the last 5 times I flew to toronto, Canada their was always empty seats whether 1 or 2 and sometimes 5-6 seats.
 Lots of times I got bumped up to bulk head(would be stupid to pay $27 for an upgrade when I can wait till I board and get it for free.) and single seats all because of those that miss their flight or wasn't fully booked.
