Most of the issue can be solved very simply, without any new design. Just board from back to front and/or window to aisle.

Like jetblue does (sometimes)

In BUR and LGB they also board from the back door.

Not so much. Some airlines already do that.

I dunno, I think this is pretty brilliant.

Boarding Window to Aisle means that people who sit next to each other can't board together. Husband/wife, friends, parents/children. I don't think customers will appreciate that, even if it does speed up the boarding process a bit.

i dont get it. aisle is only wide when they board the window seats. once they get to the middle seats, aisles shrink again. so the first 33% of the plane boards with wide aisles? The first 33% never have backups boarding. its only once the plane starts filling up. plus @Aerial Dag  has an excellent point.

I have a revolutionary concept to make all airline seats more comfortable: make them bigger. For some reason, I don't see my incredible idea taking off.

More likely that spending money to make the middle seats more appealing, airlines seem more likely to adopt the model which is becoming popular of selling restrictive lower cost fares that don't provide the option of selecting a seat prior to check-in, and to maintain the current model of having loyal and higher paying customers board earlier.
Who do you think you are fooling? You think you are going to pull a quick one on your Creator? Good luck with that.

Except this isn't just about making the seats more comfortable. Your idea costs the airline money. This idea is not only about increased comfort for middle seat, it also (supposedly) increases boarding efficiency, and increasing efficiency means increasing profits, which means making airlines money.

The first 33% don't have backups? What about the guy in aisle 4F trying for 3 minutes to stuff his overpacked carry on into the overhead compartment? How does he not block the 50 or so people in aisles 5-30? This idea allows their 50 people to continue boarding while that one imbecile fights with his luggage.

Besides, do you know what kind of money is saved by even a 10 or 15% reduction in boarding time? Could be millions per month if even allowing for a single more turn per day.

Because Airlines always do things in the customers best interest. Lol.

I'm just not sure where they're finding the additional 6 inches (3 on each side) on these planes. Taking it away from the aisle?

Good point, but an exception can be made for ppl. traveling in "one party".

Take into account the added risk now of additional moving parts. If one seat refuses to go back into position on a sold out flight......

That may work on a 7am flight from BOS to IAD but many flights contain multiple people in one party. I think allowing those exceptions would defeat the whole purpose of expedited boarding.

My thoughts exactly. And safety concerns of people pushing the button mid-flight. And when a row gets all 3 people there you'll have idiots trying to figure out how to "operate" this new thing.

I don't see this ever happening as a new standard.

You would imagine that if the airlines stood to cut boarding time in half, which according to the numbers  in the article quoted in the op, would save well over 700k a day, they would hire a research firm to study which method was most efficient.
