I want to fly mid-August NYC-MIA or NYC-FLL, yep I saw the fare's posted by Dan. On actual airlines (not spirit) fares around 170-230 rt, what's the chances fares go lower if I hold out?

Book now or wait?

Kayak has a predictor, you can try that.

If it's a decent fare to a popular destination (don't know how popular MIA is in the summer...), the fare more likely to go up than to go down, as you get closer to your travel date.

Could be a hit or miss. There were times i took a gamble with Jetblue fro, NYC-FLL or Aruba and Bahamas and the fares ended up going down as it got closer or Jetblue ended up running a promotion. Itll always be a gamble though...
