EZ pass issue / Find out owner of license plate?

Hi,

    I have charges from EZpass-NY that erroneously were charged to my account. The license plate that got
charged on to my account was ABC1234-NJ.

Customer service advised me to fax them my request, but their reply was
"Response: E-ZPass regrets to advise you that customer's are responsible for tolls posted via plate number up until the actual day the plate number is removed, and for this reason no credit can be applied for dates prior to removal of that plate number. Thank you, E-ZPass New York Customer Service."

Can anybody advise if there is anything I can do? Would it be possible to obtain the owner information of the license plate

No, I never owned that license plate. EZ-pass customer service told me that they can instantly pull up the image of the car with the license plate, and the description they gave doesn't resemble my car at all. They are telling me this license plate of ABC1234 was registered to my account. They asked me to fax in my vehicle registration, but still denied my refund request.  Over the years all my E-ZPass tolls were from the car I own, billed by tag #, not by the license plate.

Did you add this to you're account assuming no one will have this plate (which is probably a vanity plate)?

Sounds like a dummy number. Perhaps when it doesn't scan its entered as ABC1234, and then somehow, ABC1234 got attached to your account.

When I called customer service a few months ago, they delisted this plate from my account.

A longshot would be see if they would check to see if that plate is listed on another account. Somehow it was added to your account by mistake.

Ime Ezpass has horrible customer service

I had an Ezpass that I was being charged a monthly fee, so I got a new one and send back my old one and they were continuing to bill me albeit they had my old tag. It took a few months to shut down the account and another few months to get my money back for their erroneous monthly charges. So yes their customer service sucks and if you're not a step ahead of them you will continue to be charged erroneously and maybe even worse!  Good Luck!

What would you do if you figured out who the owner is?

What probably happened, when OP signed up for E-Z Pass he didn't own a car, and as is common practice, and as some people have been advised by reps he just made up a license plate number.

A while later, someone who actually owns that car drove through the toll booth without a working tag and the charges were charged to the account with that number.

Not much that the OP can claim in such a situation.

For section C, try the 4th option, planning to sue the vehicle registrant in small claims court.

I'm just trying to give you a direct answer to the question you asked; I don't necessarily think you would win such a case in court.

I had the same issue, called in E-ZPass, the rep said that he removed the vehicle from my account, but can't refund me because if the vehicle is on my account then it must be that "I added it to my account!!", & It can't be a system error, so I asked to speak with a supervisor, then the rep changed his desicion & said that he'll put in a request for me to get refunded. A week or so later I got a letter that E-ZPass refunded me $120!!

Looks like a had a had a better experience then most people.

Did that but no luck. Just going to hand them into them and be done with it on my end!
 Did my share by picking them up and trying to locate the owner.
