I'm not renting a car, I'm getting one from family but I need to get from the airport to their house and it's about a 30 min drive so what would be cheaper?
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Check Uber for a price, and do the same with the cab. Uber is probably cheaper.

Depends which airport. Depends what time. In some cities, Lyft is cheaper than both.

And if I've never used lyft I get the first ride free anyway, right?

Also check uber prices from a car rental location in an airport it may be cheaper then an uber pickup from the terminal.

Not a bad idea to share experiences at airports. (does this thread exist yet?)
JFK - taxi is the most efficient IME, assuming no line
LAX - lyft has been a couple dollars cheaper, and IME nicer cars
BUR - about the same.

I took an uber and with $20 off new account it was $2.

In other news, I had no checked bags so I walked right out of the terminal and was waiting for the Uber. He called me and told me he was there but I didn't see him anywhere and after a few minutes of trying to understand his terribly broken English I was about to give up and frustratingly take a cab. He told me to meet him between term 2 and 3 and that's exactly where I was and the app showed me that he was right by me but we both didn't see each other and we were both so confused and finally he said the word "lower" and it hit me! Of course we didn't find each other he was by arrivals and since I walked right out without needing to go downstairs for baggage claim I was standing at departures!!! I went downstairs and outside and there he was and I felt like a complete fool. I kept apologizing and now I have a new story and a lesson learnt.

And the same thing with me at jfk!
Except he went to departures while I went to arrivals, (as departures is much less traffic, but after a minute or two he called and came running up.

In many airports/terminals the departure level is a much better place to meet/pick-up a passenger. The exception to that IME is JFK Terminal 1, where one can come right up to the curb outside the terminal lower (arrivals) level.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

But you would need to request that specifically

Correct.

Though I use this strategy mainly when picking up immediate family (or being picked up by same) from the airport.

+1 especially at airport where they have people controlling traffic and shooing off anyone who's waiting for a passenger.
