Not Using Leased Car. Cancel Insurance?

Im not gonna be using my leased car for the next 8 months. Can I just cancel my insurance for a while, than reinstate it before i give it back (lease companies dont like uninsured cars)?
Please dont respond with unsolicited tips as far as giving over the lease.. Thanx

in NY as long u dont send back your license plates to the dmv u will be fined for each day u dont have insurance
