Fly paid flights. Add stopovers whenever you can to earn extra segments.
Memories last forever, make them while you can.

You can get status in many ways. If you currently hold status with another airline you could do the status match challenge and either do a mileage run to earn or if you fly regularly you could meet the requirements fairly easy. This is the link for the status match challenge. https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/mileageplus/promotions/registrationDetails.aspx?promoCode=TB8230

However if you don't currently have status the best and easiest way to do it would be through mileage runs and/or booking premium class seats for your flights. This is the link from united for their requirements for each level. https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/mileageplus/premier/qualify.aspx

Now when looking up flights on the united site if you go through to advance options it allows you to check a box so it shows your accrual info prior to booking. This helps a lot because it allows you to know how many you will get and calculates fair class bonus etc.

Hope this helps somewhat. Also don't forget you can check your progress to elite status by going to https://www.united.com/web/en-US/apps/sso/Login.aspx?return_to=wsta&redirect=sec

Status is (mostly) earned through flying, and typically has nothing to do with your mileage balances.
