At this point it's not about the odds, but active forecasts. Google eclipse weather, there are tons of sites that are constantly updating.

Last I checked the Smokies were due for thunderstorms around then.

Interesting fact: The eclipse is expected to knock out 9,000 MW of solar generation. This is more than what the entire NYC uses on a typical summer day. It is about the highest the entire PSE&G (NJ) has EVER used at a time.
Will be an issue in a few years when 1/3 of electricity is solar.
I'm not who you think I am.

It depends where the eclipse passes relative to the level of solar generation in that area, and at what time of day. If high magnitude eclipse goes through California during midday, then we could see huge campaigns asking for conservation of energy that day. But power companies could also fire up the old coal generating equipment for one day. Or the eclipse could happen late in the day, which is not peak generation time. Or it could eclipse in places where not much solar generated, like the northeast.

Link?

They'll quicker spend billions in California then use coal even for 1 day...

Or might relocate after reading this thread

Won't happen. In the northeast solar is less than 1% of capacity and even in CA it is about 5. Their projections to reach 50% renewable only include solar at less than 10% of total capacity. The unreliability of solar is very much taken into account when the grid plans for reliability. ISOs which have capacity markets (the entire from IL to WV and north as well as most of the Midwest) only allow solar, wind, and the like to be included up to a certain percentage of capacity.
But power companies could also fire up the old coal generating equipment for one day. Or the eclipse could happen late in the day, which is not peak generation time.
This is a misconception of the practicalities of electric generation. A coal plant can't just suddenly one day decide to power up. It takes weeks and months of planning. It also does not just sit. Retired plants are either getting converted or dismantled. They don't just sit around waiting for the next eclipse.

Peak usage is also not at mid-day. Typically it occurs between 3 and 6 pm.

In CA, sure. Plus, a day of conservation will only seem funner. If it's close enough to Earth Day then Sesame Street and NPR will help out. But the rest of the country may find it tougher to widely implement conservation.

A few hours of sunlight downtime is a blip in the larger scheme of things, but the energy industry has to make contingency plans for everything.

I respect your knowledge man, but it's not a misconception. An eclipse doesn't sneak up on us. Before the country would ever convert to being 33% reliant on solar energy you better believe there would be an eclipse contingency plan in place. And if that meant maintaining redundant reserve generating capacity they would do that.

Of course they plan, but dusting off an old coal plant won't work.

Thank you for purchasing an item
related to viewing the solar eclipse

DO NOT look at the sun with your naked eyes. Permanent damage to your eyesight, and even blindness may result. ALWAYS wear properly certified solar viewing glasses when viewing the sun before, during, and after an eclipse. Do not use non-solar binoculars to aid in viewing the eclipse, even when wearing protective eye gear. During an eclipse, when the moon covers a portion of the sun, the intensity of the light remains constant.

DO NOT point a camera at the sun unless the optics are fitted with a properly certified solar filter. Optics can magnify the intensity and brightness of sunlight, and this can cause damage to you or your equipment.

DO NOT look through the viewfinder of an unfiltered SLR camera when it is pointed at or near the sun, because of the increase in brightness of the sunlight passing through magnifying optics.

DO NOT look through the viewfinder of a rangefinder camera when it is pointed at or near the sun, as the optical viewfinder will not protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging light.

DO NOT point an unfiltered digital camera at the sun and use live view or an electronic viewfinder, due to the possibility of focusing concentrated, unfiltered sunlight at your camera’s sensor.

Products should only be used for their intended purpose and in an appropriate manner. Misuse of products may cause serious injury and property damage.

I'm driving from ATL up north on sunday morning to a jewish camp that's right dead in the center of the path.  It's having two days of programming and then a BBQ during the exclipse itself.
