Won't happen. In the northeast solar is less than 1% of capacity and even in CA it is about 5. Their projections to reach 50% renewable only include solar at less than 10% of total capacity. The unreliability of solar is very much taken into account when the grid plans for reliability. ISOs which have capacity markets (the entire from IL to WV and north as well as most of the Midwest) only allow solar, wind, and the like to be included up to a certain percentage of capacity. This is a misconception of the practicalities of electric generation. A coal plant can't just suddenly one day decide to power up. It takes weeks and months of planning. It also does not just sit. Retired plants are either getting converted or dismantled. They don't just sit around waiting for the next eclipse.

Peak usage is also not at mid-day. Typically it occurs between 3 and 6 pm.
They are currently working on making solar viable to be used as 1/3 of all electricity, such as huge battery stations. Don't say something won't work because of practicalities. Electric cars where not at all practical, where they?
I'm not who you think I am.

In a few years? If it is in conjunction with batteries then it will not be an issue during an eclipse either. Also being viable and actually getting there are two very different things. Even CAISO does not predict more than around 9% solar by 2030.

What makes you say that those saying electric cars were impractical were wrong? There is not yet any practical electric car for the vast majority of car users. Even the ones who do buy them are doing it for ideology or status.

That 500,000 people put $1,000 down on an all electric car.

So? Also, who ever said that an electric car could not be practical or that solar can't be practical? It just won't happen in a few years or anything close to it.

so?
Ok. Let's agree to disagree. I believe it can happen in a few years and you believe that it'll take much longer. Only way to find out is to wait

One thing I want to point out is that you are basing on speculation while I am coming from the regulators and grid operators. Four month's ago PJM published a major study of their evolving generation mix. Their most solar leaning scenario places solar below 10% in 6 years. Their most likely scenario places it at 0.1%. CAISO with their standard of 50% renewable by 2030 only has solar up to 9.8%. There are many calculations needed to reach 30% other than the potential reliability. Let's leave it that they and most likely myself (I am dealing with energy policy as a full time business, although not this specific aspect of it) will have a better picture.

I'm a big technology bull, and if you look at the history of electric cars (going back to the 1970's), it's very impressive how far they've come to making it realistic. But range anxiety is and will remain a huge roadblock to widespread success. Rapid charging is just not rapid enough, and having fill stations that swap out batteries is pretty impractical (so far).
I'm an optimist; but only because life isn't going to give me any other good choices.

I guess not. Nothing on SW and UA/AA are to high.
I just found a new supply of forks!

The official DO group is flying into XNA.
Wasn't too hard to manufacture award space into MCI though.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

XNA has space. What time is it supposed to be there
