Ticket Refund for Hospitalized Traveler
« on: March 22, 2018, 05:19:15 PM »
Anybody have any experience getting a refund for a ticket for a patient who is unable to fly? The tickets are on Delta & Virgin (Economy plus, non-refundable, no insurance) bought on a Chase Freedom.

Get a letter from the hospital stating that he can't fly, and see if they will refund or give e-credit for future travel. When the passenger is at their city of origin, many airlines would allow it.
IME, (similar situations - not exactly this) I've gotten El Al to refund. And I've gotten DL to change free of charge.

I sincerely hope that Delta & Virgin will have better policies than TK does. The reimbursements I've recently received for non-refundable ticket cancellation and change fees, from the coverage provided by my Citi Premier card, are worth a lot more than the annual fee for that card (and they gave me the option to receive the reimbursement by check, so I got to keep the TYP earned).
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

What about the companion? (Her Husband) Any chance of getting that back?

Unfortunately credit will probably never get used if it's tied to the specific passenger :-(

Looks like in very extreme situations where they refund, they do it also for immediate family members or travel companions.

You should definitely try to get a refund, even if they just offer a travel voucher or something like that initially, be persistent. Delta cares about their reputation.

I really hope you manage to get a refund, but I can see @Dan writing something up on DDMS about the importance of using the right card for the purchase, in order to avoid עגמת נפש.

United charged me for change fees, but then refunded everything for all passengers as per their policy posted online. Be aware that they won't cover fare increases and they won't refund the $50 ticket reissuing fee. Any normal trvael insurance will.

I always had very good experience with delta, is it a delta ticket stock?

Just make sure that the letter should be written well so they will offer a refund and not just credit

Just to update, Delta gave me a full refund on both tickets, Virgin gave me credit in a travel bank not connected with the passenger name.

Neither airline asked for any letters or proof. Delta just asked for the name and number of the hospital but I doubt they did anything with that.

Thank you all for your input.

They put you on hold and they take a break, while you think they check with the hospital...
