do I need to close my current one before reapplying?

You can only be approved for a 2nd AAviator if your first was an old USAirways card that was forced product change to AAvaitor

Besides for the sign up bonus, does this card differ in any way from the citi aadvantage card?

They offer different levels of priority boarding but that's really but that big of a deal.

No, it seems they are identical regarding boarding. Both said this:

"Eligible cardmembers will board after Priority boarding is complete, but before the rest of economy boarding. The boarding benefit will display on your American Airlines boarding pass as Group 5."

Do they ever actually board by groups? I don't remember being on a flight were people neatly boarded according to group. The only priority boarding I see is for Business/First but for economy it always looks like first come, first serve (or first push, first serve).

Could be they just changed it when they changed their boarding numbers, I know it definitely used to be different.
