Priceline and Hotels.com dont have options for suites. How did you book?
Perhaps they are just sold out on your dates. I booked with point suite upgrade (5K+3K per night) via their twitter cs.

My experience has been that connecting rooms are not guaranteed and depends on availability at time of check in.
While that is true, I've booked countless connecting rooms and only once didn't get connecting. So my wife and I slept in different rooms that one time. Big deal.

Its happened more than I would prefer. Sometimes we're across the hall, but occassionally even down the hall.

Is it a bad idea to book a regular room and only say I have 2 adults and show up with 3 kids with me and try to get upgraded to a suite by a Marriott residence inn?  I have gold status

Call before. If it's a random Residence Inn and not too busy, they may be happy to confirm an upgrade to a suite before you arrive.
