Contacts Not Showing On Incoming Call - Help
« on: November 08, 2017, 02:39:09 PM »
My contacts are all stored with the country code like 1-718-123-4567 and when I get incoming calls they come up without the country code like 718-123-4567.  My phone as a result does not recognise the contact. What could I do?

Export the contacts to a spreadsheet and batch remove the leading 1s, then import back.

Thanks. Can you please eleborate a little? I'm extremely not tech savvy... How do I export it to a spreadsheet? On computer? How do I import it back onto phone?

Are the contacts from the phone itself, or the are Google Contacts syncing to the phone when you sign in the Google account?

It's through Google.

Export to CSV like guided here https://www.wikihow.com/Export-Gmail-Contacts
I have 3 options where to export to,

Google CSV format (for importing into a Google account)
Outlook CSV format (for importing into Outlook or another application)
vCard format (for importing into Apple Address Book or another application)

Which one do I choose and how do I take it further?

I'd do outlook CSV.

Then open in Google Sheets (or open in Excel and select all and C/P to Google Sheets.

In Google Sheets make a Find and Replace from 1\d{10} to $1

Then save back as CSV and import in Google (delete first all the contacts there).

d stands for digits? While 10 being 10 digits?
Wonder if I could do the same thing by adding a +(plus) and a 1 in front of all my phone numbers in my contacts, would make it a lot eaiser to place phone calls while using Google hangouts or Google Voice( as all u.s. and Canadian numbers need to have the plus sign and the number one before dialing.)
If it doesn't have a plus and and a 1 in front of the number I have to remember the 10 digit number and plug it in manually to call.
What coding would I use to change all my numbers to a 1 and+? Thanks

Yes, \d is digits and {10} is a quantifier for the thing it is after.

You would replace (\d{10}) with +1$1:

I have to put in this {10}? Or the actual 10 digit phone number? Also what does $1 stand for? It means take out the 1?

The \d with {10} will found you all ten digit phone numbers (I assume this is how your numbers look now.) And it is in parentheses to group the found results. Then we replace that (wherever it is found) with a +1 and then $1 which means group 1 from the find, which in out case means the phone number.

I'm asking in my case. Which command will take out the 1s?

Some contacts still showing the 1 I guess because they are stored with a plus + before the 1 and need to be removed differently?

Search for \+1(\d{10}) and replace with $1. But make sure "Also search within formulas" is checked.

This is good if all numbers are in the format of 1xxxxxxxxxx or +1xxxxxxxxxx but there were all kind of numbers with parentheses dashes and spaces... What I ended up with was replacing these:
\+1(\d{10})$
1(\d{10})$

With $1.
And these:
1-(\d{3})-(\d{3})-(\d{4})
(\d{3})-(\d{3})-(\d{4})
1 (\d{3})-(\d{3})-(\d{4})
\((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})
\+1 (\d{3})-(\d{3})-(\d{4})
\+1 \((\d{3})\) (\d{3})-(\d{4})
1(\d{3}) (\d{3}) (\d{4})
(\d{3}) (\d{3}) (\d{4})

With $1$2$3

Assuming I would use +1$1+1$2+1$3.
Will try this as soon as I get near a computer.
Thanks yt?.

Curious how would I avoid changing numbers which start with 05..
Meaning don't want to change any Israeli numbers?
