Hat
Just in LGA, they were asking women to remove their sweater. It would be prudent to make sure that the shell underneath won't cause a problem

I once witnessed them trying to make a young lady remove her shaitel because it kept beeping (she had metal clips). She was alone & didn’t know what to do. I went over & put an end to that.

I had a similar story in CIA (Rome) where they asked me to pass the metal detector without any head covering. After explaining to them that I can't walk like that for religious reasons, he took me into a side room and scanned just my yarmulke while I was standing there

A bit of a back story:

Recently I was catching a flight from Nimes Airport (France) to a wedding. If I would miss the flight, I would miss the wedding.

By security screening, I was walking through the metal detector, and one of the security agents told me in his words "Take off your Kipa".
This was obsurd to me. Out all the countries I have been to in Europe, I was never told to remove my Yarlmuka when walking through a metal detector. What puzzled me more was the woman in front of me and in back of me were both wearing hijab, but were let through no problem.
When he told me to take it off, I looked at him like he was crazy and responded "are you serious?" He then motioned to the head security guard to come. I didn't want to make a scene and especially didn't want to miss my flight. Without more questions I did what he said and covered my head with my sleeve, and gave him a dirty look while walking through the detector.
This whole thing obviously made me feel that he was discriminating against Jewish people.

What are the policies for religious garments in French airports?

Could I have made a point by asking why he let woman wearing Hijab through the scanners?

Thanks for reading through.

I hope this is an isolated incident, but in France you never know, people are afraid to walk in the streets with a kippah (is that true? don't know, that's what I heard)

Not a religious item but they wanted to CUT my brothers cast he had on his leg to check. Needless to say my mothers yelling and screaming scared them and they backed down. This was about 15  years ago

Are you talking about the incident, or when you are writing the post? Are you also stuck in a time loop?

About 13 years ago, they wanted my husband and son to remove their tzitzis and put them through the scanner with their jackets going through security in ORD.  My DH refused.  I suggested tucking them under their shirts, but the guard refused, so they ended up getting patted down.  This despite my DH immediately lifting them to show that it is simply a piece of cloth.

I have had my head patted down in many domestic and foreign airports because of my tichel, but they never asked me to remove it.  I did have once where the security person asked me to confirm that I wear it for religious reasons, glaring at a woman nearby while she asked.  I guess that the other woman had said something about my tichel.

Once or twice I was asked to pat my Yarmulka down etc, so I usually just put it in the x-ray to get through quicker and very often the staff goes out of their way to explain that I can keep it on.

You can keep a hat (fedora) on as well, instead of it getting knocked around in the conveyor belt.

While TSA pre check is a nice have and a great convenience, there are unfortunately ~194 countries that don't currently except it. ;)
