I prepare 8 wrapped gifts. My daughter gets to choose 1 each night. I get 8 scratch-off lottery tickets for my husband. 1 for each night. I don’t expect anything.

What $ range? My initial reaction was "wow, what a high standard", but I guess It's more appropriate to ask the price range beforehand.  :)

even if you knew the price range you would have to ask their financial situation as well ;)

That would only somewhat explain the high standard and not make it any less high.

We did growing up. Usually one bigger thing and then smaller things.  Kinda stuck to that tradition.   It's gotten way out of hand IMO.

i only have 1 kid so i need to put in a lot of thought into a gift. i don't want her to be spoiled but i want her to have plenty toys/things to do (since i can't be her sole activity). last year, for example i got her crayons (for school. she broke them all), i got her an umbrella (she took hers to school without permission and it broke. i wanted her to have an umbrella but i didn't want her to feel rewarded for breaking the rules). i also got her flash cards, a puzzle, a white board, boots, stickers, and a coloring book.

so you see it's not the price point that matters to me. it's what the gift means. and if i want to give her something bigger but i don't want her to feel spoiled (a $50 set of playmobile) i get it and give it to my mom to give...

My wife's thing with umbrellas is, she knows that taking to school/yeshiva is definite suicide for that opening stick, on the other hand, why would they have one if they cannot use it (in a time that they have to be outside. What she does is, she let's them take it till the bus (where she waits with them anyway) and then she brings it back home with her. Same thing with my boys. She walks them to yeshiva, as we live nearby and they are delighted to be the only ones coming with a "real" umbrella, and then she just brings them home with her.

I was under the impression that people give "gelt" and not "gifts".

That's what I do. I've heard some say that the gift giving stems from what the goyim do this season. Though, I havn't heard a clear makor for this to make prohibited.

It's in the Bible: ובחוקותיהם לא תלכו
ETA: I'm not confirming that's where it stems from, but if it is, then you have a makor
