Notes:
Avoid Euronet ATMs at tourist sites. Use bank ATMs. Always decline the "exchange guarantee" the ATM operator is offering you, choose local currency, your own bank will have a better exchange rate than what the ATM is offering you. The ATM "exchange guarantee" is a scam and hidden fee that should be avoided.

I meant using your debit card to withdraw from an ATM the same way you do so at home. You are correct a credit card would be expensive.
I have seen forex exchange places at the airport and the city center but I have never used them.
Guys Budapest is not Niarobi.
There are many exchange places and the ones in the city center are cheaper then the airport. Just double check before to make sure you don't get ripped off.

My bank debit card says I will get charged foreign transaction fees so that is not a good idea.

I see some say that many places prefer euro rather than forint, should I rather get euros?

Ask your bank what the charges are? Is it $2 or a lot more? Usually you get a better exchange rate when using an ATM.
Forint and Euro/USD are freely exchangeable, there is no reason why a place should prefer euro over HUF

If you are coming from the US and you get euros than you will get hit by the exchange rates twice: USD -> Euro -> Forint.

Plenty good places to exchange. Just check the rate online with Google and if youre getting something near that youre good. There is an Amex office on Vaci street that i used and found the larger hotels will give you decent exchange rate too.

Upon arrival in BUD, I was able to go into lounges with PP.
Pretty shvach, but good for a quiet place to sit down.

You could pre order and eat at Hanna, which is the same building as the shul.

Depending on where you are staying the hotels and many houses have sensors on the hallway and outside lights. Make sure that you have the front desk aware of (and understand) shabbos needs. Dont walk in the street with a tallis. Be vigilant. Was there in March.

Hanna is great. You can also eat at Carmel. http://www.carmel.hu/en

There is a sign on the wall when you enter the courtyard to Hanna that claims that Hanna is the only orthodox restaurant. It's misleading to say at least. They probably meant to say that Hanna is the only one under the supervision of the "official" orthodox kehillah. Chabad gives out its own hechsher and has a few shuls in the city.

I think they don't get along too well.

Like most communities and Chabad.

They don't get along too well, so that's why they consider themselves the only one. I once asked them when there is minyanim in the morning, and they said that therey're only one when in fact Chabad also has.
