5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Thanks sam.

Any ideas on the first question? What would you tell them? They took away my opportunity to apply and get a bonus?

You don't have to give them a reason. Just ask to be matched, and that you're a good customer, blah blah blah.

See what happens.

try sending them an SM requesting a match. Also I've heard about a $250 offer so you might want to look for that before SMing
I had the same story and I send them an SM requesting to match the sign-up bonus. They told me you have 90 days from your account opening to request a match. Since I opened my Freedom last year they were not willing to give me the match.

BUT... There's nothing to loose. So why not try it ?!

They actually gave me a Freedom card 5 years ago when I opened my Chase checking account.  Last year when there was a 20k UR bonus I SM'd asking for some bonus since I never received one and they gave me 2500.  I replied that this seems low considering that people signing up now are getting 10X that and they gave me another 5000.  I was happy with that and didnt push it any further, after all I was asking for it well after 90 days.  In fact well over 1000 days.

Lucky you. I tried but they wouldn't give it to me. That's why I wrote 'you have nothing to loose. why not try it ?!' You never know what you gonna get!

I would try and get more.  They didnt give you the choice to switch over, they just did it.  You would have considered closing that card and applying for the freedom if it would have been your choice.  2500 is a nice gesture but you are looking at people who just signed up and are getting 30,000.

What do you mean?

You just got a targeted offer in the mail?
You just get approved for a card with that offer?
You just had the $300 bonus post to your account?

FYI...this was the actual message:

Thank you for taking the time to email us regarding the
rewards on your Sapphire account.

I would like to clarify that you will earn an annual
bonus, regardless of spend, and there is no cap on the 7%
dividend. The initial sign up bonus is considered earned
points and subject to the dividend.

If you have any further questions, please reply using the
Secure Message Center.

So what happens if you transfer freedom points to your sapphire preferred, do you also get the 7% dividend on those points?
