5% categories for fourth quarter of 2017:
Dept. stores and Walmart

There are three possibilities for how many points are earned. In the following examples, the effective rates are assuming you cash out the points for 1 cent each, but if you can transfer them to Sapphire Preferred or Ink, the effective rate could be much higher.
  • Cardholders without a Chase checking account
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point, an effective rate of 1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points, an effective rate of 5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points, an effective rate of 5%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in older program
1 base point per dollar plus 10% of the base points plus 10 points per transaction for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories.
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 11.1 points, an effective rate of 11.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 61 points, an effective rate of 6.1%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 520 points, an effective rate of 5.2%.
    Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7660 points, an effective rate of 5.11%.
  • Cardholders with a Chase checking account in newer program
1 base point per dollar for all spending. Additional 4 bonus points per dollar for spending up to $1500 in quarterly categories. Annual bonus of 10% of the total of base and bonus points (until February 2016).
Example 1: Spend $1 on a parking meter. Earn 1 point on the next statement and .1 points at year's end, an effective rate of 1.1%.
Example 2: Spend $10 to refill a Metrocard in 2016 Q1. Earn 50 points on the next statement and 5 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 3: Spend $100 to buy a Long Island Rail Road Peak Ten-Trip ticket between zones 1 and 3 in 2016 Q1. Earn 500 points on the next statement and 50 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.
Example 4: Spend $1500 at 7-Eleven in 2016 Q1. Earn 7500 points on the next statement and 750 points at year's end, an effective rate of 5.5%.

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but I thought I would mention just in case, chase.com has the online shopping mall that earns bonus point when you shop through them. I just ordered from Walmart via the chase.com and got 2% back in addition to the 5% for using my freedom card- that's 7% plus if you redeem with the CSR that 10.5% back.
maybe this is the reason all walmart prices was raised online, things I purchased in the past is now with almost a dollar more (checked few items) only get the old prices if I do pickup in store so basically worthless shopping at walmart online now, or maybe has to do because they decided to offer 2 day shipping and there is no slower speed.

I tried a $500 VGC today. The cashier allowed it, but it was hard coded: debit only, not cc. I inserted my cc, and the machine was dormant.
I was able to buy gc's with a credit card when I last visited my local store on 11/26, but the register wouldn't allow it this afternoon.

Is it possible to "downgrade" a freedom unlimited card to a regular freedom card. Then hit Q1 Spending and then conver the card back to Freedom unlimited?

Now that we have the option to buy Visa/MC/Amex GCs at "gas stations", and also use Android Pay anywhere else, where is the cheapest place to get $500 cards? Thanks.

Android Pay.
have seen a posted video on this where someone tried using android pay and many big chain stores didn't even have the option of paying with android pay, also sounds like most local small business will also not accept it.

If one has chase ink cards, is there any reason to have a sapphire open versus having a freedom Unlimited, what benefit exactly do you get with Chase Sapphire besides for foreign transaction, while with the freedom unlimited I can get 1.5 for every dollar and to transfer my MR points and use them I can use my Ink.
‏ is there really any worth in the sapphire to pay $95 annually?

If you have the INK preferred, you can still use the redeem for travel, or transfer to airlines, but with the ink cash not.

2X points on travel and dining

For the half a point difference, you would have to spend thousands of dollars for it to be worth the fee.

For me personally its worth it for the free additional users (that get to use it in Israel)
Besides from that really no benefit.
